Stevens 404 semi military

Print Post
Hello All,  I am looking at a Stevens model 404 semi military that I found for sale.  I can't find much information on this model besides it was made between 1910-16.  Anyone know much about these?  This one is in great shape with nearly all bluing and color case on the receiver.  It also has what I believe to be a Stevens 104 tang sight.
Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim, Had one afew months back. Was told by Paul Shuttleworth ( CPA Rifles ) that only about 250 were ever made of this model and produced only for about 3 years. ( 1913 to 1916 ) A small paragraph is in Single Shot Rifles by James Grant on page 102. And a picture on page 65. A rare & scarce rifle. Hope this helps. Dale.

Thanks Dale.  I found a little more information on the 404 in the book "The Rifle in America" by Sharpe.

On page 19 of "Still More Single Shot Rifles"  (Grant) mentions that he has reports of 404s built on the 44 action, numbers in the 61xxx range, but then goes on to say that  he has data on one on the 44 1/2 action, s/n 11387.  No pictures.

The "No.11" catalog I have shows the rifle as built on the 44 action.

Grant also mentions the 404 on page 39/40 of "More Single Shot Rifles", seeming to confirm that it was built on both actions.

Interesting.

My 44 1/2 version is #12XXX. Barrel had been re blued but original and nice shape otherwise. Paid around $1200 for it 3 years ago and thought the price was fair at the time. Don't see them for sale very often.

Mine's the 44 1/2 action, SN 11xxx. Original rear sight was LYMAN 42 (I think), front ,Stevens globe.     deHaas did an article in American Rifleman on the 404 based on a 44 action, saying, "he didn't think they existed". I bought mine about 40yrs. ago for $275, because I wanted the Stevens 104 tang sight that was on it for my 44 1/2 model 49.        ...MIKE...

Thanks!   If indeed the "44" action 404s used the same serial number sequence as the rest of the "44" framed models, this helps put lay down a milestone for dating of the whole group, since we know that the 404 had a short run and was discontinued at the start of WW1.
