32/40 Maynard smokeless loads

Anyone out there shooting a Maynard in 32/40 Winchester (not a 32/35)?  It is a Maynard barrel.  I looked up loads in several books like Cartridges of the World, Nonte, and Lyman.  Under category for "safe in old guns" referenced by Hodgdon recommended 4198 14 gr.  I dropped back to 13.5 gr of 4198, gun didn't blow but it seemed right sharp to me--did not use a chronograph as I tested it remotely.  NO evidence or primer flow and easy extraction.  I am just worried about the action strength and don't want to damage the gun or myself.  I suppose any smokeless load safe in a Ballard or a 44 would be safe in a Maynard. With a 165 gr lead bullet, anyone have an accurate safe load they have use in a Maynard 32/40?

Safe and good shooting for the 44 action is, 12.2 gr 4759. 4227 would also work but, I've shot  4759 load.

4.5 gr, 4759 and 30 gr 1f would also work, fixed.

I have been shooting an 1882 Maynard Model 16 in .32-40 Winchester for almost 20 years.  It is a wonderful rifle to shoot and extremely accurate.

Here are two loads that I use that consistently shoot under 1" at 100 yds:

154 gr. Spitzer, 12.6 gr. 4759, Rem 2 1/2 primer
181 gr FP, 12.2 gr. AA#9, Rem 2 1/2 primer

The rifle is mounted with a Sidel scope of apx. 4 x

At 200 yds. with the same loads, the rifle will shoot into 3".

Good luck!

Yes, I also recommend the Rem 2 1/2 primer with both my loads.

Thanks, that gives me a lot of confidence in a safe load.
