Anybody know about this one ?

A Ballard 6-1/2 Rigby sold today at an Eastern PA auction for $4600 plus (?) 17% buyer's premium
I didn't handle the gun, but was told the bore was very dirty and needed a good cleaning.
Externally, it looked very nice .
Obviously, the auction house had no clue about the model.
Was that a good price ????

Well its not a number 10. The frame is rebated and the barrel is too small, also most were chambered in 38-55

You're right. I think some of these gun auctioneer wannabes ought to invest in at least a USED copy of Flaydermans guide. Grin

I agree that it is a 6 1/2 Rigby and I'd have jumped on it for that amount.

To be honest, I can't say for sure that it actually "sold" for that amount.

I was given some pre-sale info that sort of put me off:  that there was a reserve on this gun, but the auctioneer didn't know what it was; and that the owner/consignor would be in the audience  bidding (read: buying back) on it and only HE knew how much he was willing to let it go for.
Furthermore, if the owner/consignor ended up buying it back, then the backup bidder(read:real bidder) would have the opportunity to meet the  reserve .
Neat deal, huh ?
The timing was impeccable too.
The gun got "sold" around 9:30 AM EST; so there was plenty of time to get it down to the Baltimore gun show if there was a desire to do so.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I think someone got a VERY GOOD deal on that 6 1/2 pistol grip Ribgy for the end price; even with buyer's premium! Looks like a lovely Ballard, and a Rigby Ballard doesn't come up for sale often. Congratualtions to whoever got it!
