Paper bullets for Sharps

Could someone help me with a source for paper bullets for my .52 caliber Sharps?  When I get it cleaned and checked out by a gunsmith, I would like to shoot it a few times.  It takes the paper bullets.  Also, any particular "caps" to use on the nipple?  Thanks from a newbie.

Check Shiloh Sharps, I think they sell loading supplies for the paper cartridge Sharps.

Last time I looked Shiloh didn't sell the papers for making paper cartridges anymore.  I think Buffalo Arms has the papers, but to my mind they are outrageously expensive.  One brans of "stump remover" is 99% KNO3 which is what you nitrate the paper with.  Take a look at the Shiloh Forum as there is a board for the 1863 Sharps which has a LOT of information.  I also have an original and am working up to shooting it this spring.  For a bullet I will be using the Lyman 54 caliber "minie" bullet.  Used that very successfully when I had a paper cartridge Shiloh military rifle.   Use standard musket caps for ignition.

Have you checked with Dixie Gun Works?

I have a .45 Shilo 1863 percussion.  I have always made my own ctgs. using pottasium nitrate (saltpeter) soaked thin paper.  However, you don't need the paper ctgs. to shoot a percusssion Sharps..simply drop bullet into breech & using short rod or dowel..seat it firmly aginst lands & pour in measured charge.

You might want to check with Buffalo Arms.  I think that they sell nitrated paper, and likely some of the other stuff you need.

For years I made my own nitrated paper for my 54 cal. Shiloh.  Then, I tried just using plain copy paper for the cartridges and they worked as well as the nitrate paper.  My advise is just to make the cartridges out of any plain paper and then use a very thin paper (cigarette or women's hair curler paper) to glue on the end of the cartridge after the powder has been added.

No special glue is needed, just plain liquid white school glue like Elmers.  Use the glue to first join the sides of the cartridge tube together.  Then glue the tube to the ringtail or base of the bullet.  Pour powder in and glue on the end cap.

As far as a percussion cap goes, use standard musket caps, sometimes called top hat caps.

My standard load for a 54 caliber Sharps carbine is 50 grains of GOEX ffg powder behind a 490 grain lead ringtail bullet.
