  In approximately the late 1840's, the U.S. Ordinance Department contracted with Daniel S. Nippes of Philadelphia to convert 1,000 Model 1840 flintlock muskets to percussion ignition.

Enter, Edward Maynard, the highly respected Washington D.C. dentist and arms inventor who furnished the design specifications and methodology use to successfully accomplish the conversion task.  The U.S. Ordnance Department was obviously well pleased with the end result so that they renewed Mr. Nippes' contract for a second quantity of 1,000 additional muskets.

I offer the following sample 1840 musket which shows in much detail the conversion kit which was employed for accomplishing this conversion.

I would conclude that this piece of "Maynard-dum" and history should be brought to the attention of my brother Maynard enthusiasts, as well as to others.
