Loading and shooting the 32-20 for a novice

My CPA in 32-20 CPA should be in my hands Thursday; Friday I will be casting in the Hock mold that comes with it.  Breech seating will be done with a plugged case until a mechanical seater can be ordered.  Need to decide on which type of seater, any advice?

My main concern is handling the charged cases.  I have the MTM case but am concerned about powder retention.  Is the floral foam wad something to pursue, or corked cases.  A search of this side did not provide the information I am looking for.  So, advise requested and thanks for suffering the newbie inquiry.

you can use a box cutter knife type and cut slices about 5mm thick out of floral foam. when you press the case mouth against the foam, the plug will stay there, if transported with the MTM box. You can add padding inside the box lid, to keep cases from rattling.

Review the For Sale column on the Index page. Several members build very well made breech seaters of various types. You might place a WTB type ad for a breech seater and see who responds.
Good luck and welcome

I have always preferred to use natural products in my shooting. I have used cork wads almost forever I have never had a bit or trouble with them.

I also use 1/8" cork for my plugs. I tried the styrofoam used as butchers trays for a while until I put a lit match to the styrofoam. It melts like plastic. I didn't want that in my barrel.
Just my observation

I had to go with a custom mold from Harlan Sage at Sagebrush products in Gurley Nebraska for my 32-20 CPA. Mold dimensions are within a half thousandth of my request.

Hi Pentz,

I'm shooting a CPA in 32-20CPA two years now. I've used floral foam 1/4" thick seated on the powder with good results. This was recommended by Gail and Paul at CPA. I believe its what they do as well. Recently I switched to foam pipe insulation seated at the mouth. The wad flies out the barrel intact and I noticed less fouling with them. Accuracy seems to be a little better for me with the pipe insulation. It could also be that I'm becoming more familiar with this rifle.

I've been shooting a 32-20 WCF ,breech seated, using 7.3 grains of 4227 and a small ball of kapok on the powder with good results.  I use a Dillon 45 ACP box for transporting the charged cases.  The box is a very good fit for the 32-20.

Thanks to all, good advice.  I'll hunt up the cork.  Scored some H110, 4759 an have a good supply of 4227 on hand.  Hope to be shooting next week!
