Had a nice talk with Chris Hodgdon today and he stated that" Winchester 296 is the same powder as H110, not faster and not slower but the same . " He was very well versed in the Schuetzen game and assured me that H110 or Win. 296 are safe with breech seated loads . He also mentioned H108 as being a good powder for the 32-40 . Chris told me he shot Schuetzen with the 32 Miller Short . Thanks

296 was indeed a slower powder. If you can find some old burn rate charts look it up for verification.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) Look at the burn rate chart listed from fastest to slowest. Note where IMR 4227 is located, slower than both Win 296 and H110 ?

Thanks Joe, I thought that was 32-40.

Back when I was loading 357 Mag with 296, light loads were causing blow up trouble  Cry  Cowboy shooters were doing the same thing with their 45 Colt SSA Cry Cry but not sure which or how many powders.

I'm sticking to 4227 in my Ballard Smiley

You are correct about the 32-40, Bob.  Oakley and his assistant did use the 32-40 for their initial tests. They could not create a failure using  H110. Switched to the BR style case and had two blowups.

I assumed and still do that the 32-40 blowups using H110 must have been double charges. Was a long time ago and hard to recall details. Chuck Bordman might remember more about it. You know he's in rehab? Broke his hip. Cannot go home till he can walk.

Yes, me too. Tell him that I said "Hi" and get to walking so, we can see him at Nine Mile.

I knew he was in rehab, but I haven't heard anything since right after his surgery.

I'm sure the unnamed anonymous assistant told me they were 99.9% sure a double charge did not do it.

Chuck also had back surgery on Halloween at the U of W.  Tricky little job they did.  None of the regular everyday doctors would touch him.  He was just getting to where he could walk a couple blocks when he broke the hip.  Been a long grueling  last 3 or 4 years for him.
