Phil Collins and the Alamo need our help!

I just read an interesting article in "True West" magazine about the rock star, Phil Collins and his amazing Alamo collection. He is donating the whole collection to the Alamo. Worth $15 Million! And he will help build a new museum at the Alamo to house it. He has Jim Bowie's knife, Dave Crockett's possibles bag and his rifle! And much more.
Donations are requested to help build the museum. You can help out here:

As a Texan, it is quite humbling that a gentleman from England would take such interest in the fight for independence by men such as Austin, Travis, Bowie and Crockett.  Most of the Musicians and Hollywood crowd are often so self absorbed and on the far left side of social issues especially when it comes to the fight for freedom actually involving physical conflict.  It gives me even more appreciation for Phil Collins as a person above his great ability as a musician.
Americans and Texans especially owe this gentleman a very sincere thank you for his financial investment in the preservation and return to Texas of those artifacts which signify the struggle for Texas Independence.

Great piece of American history and Collins' collection is quite something. The Menger Hotel,  just up the block from the Alamo is also worthy of a visit. Teddy Roosevelt organized the 'Rough Riders' at the Menger and they have an excellent selection of historic photo's. Headed down with Deadeye Bly to shoot the TX State Championship BPCR matches the first weekend of May. Unfortunately, will not have time to do any 'sight-seeing', other than thru the apertures. and don't forget the Texas Rangers museum. I visit San Antonio about every 60 days on business. For years I thought the Texas Rangers Museum was about a sports team and I had no interest. But one day a client wanted to visit so what the heck. It was all about guns and law enforcement! A must see. Fantastic collection of 1800 firearms.

Just watched the ceremony with Phil Collins, and all I can say is what a gentleman, and true collector! He's definitely not your typical example of what we see in other rock and roll performers. I loved his comment about buying Alamo collectables and driving a 10 year old car!

Interesting story and a good cause.     I DO have reservations about "alamo artifacts"   and especially "Crockett rifles". This is something I have followed pretty carefully over the last 10 years or so.
There are two rifles generally accepted by  the "long-rifle scholars" the one that he possibly traded for a horse as a young man so he could go get married----it has been exhibited and reproduced, full-scale drawings are available from several sources.  The other one is the "Pretty Polly" percussion presentation rifle he was presented with by the young whigs of Philadelphia on his "national tour" as an absentee congressman late in his political career.  It was left behind along with most of his other "eastern-style" rifles when he went to Texas and was retained by his family.  (Who headed west to TX some years after his death at the Alamo to claim one of the substantial land grants awarded to all the the "Alamo hero's" survivors--a scandalously corrupted program though the Crocketts were never tainted with it)   At last note it was secure in a California bank vault.  it was last seen publicly about 15 years ago.
There is correspondence existing that indicates that soon after he got to TX he traded the (eastern) rifle he brought with him from TN for a "western rifle".  The studied assumption is that it was probably a larger bore shorter barreled rifle more adapted to western game and horseback use.
He probably owned a number of different rifles----at least one is documentable for sure. they are lost in the mists of time and history.   A couple "crockett-rifles" have turned up with the owner's 'family-tradition" of having been "his"  some were blatantly frauds, others of possible right time and style--but nothing documentable.
Pretty much the same situation applies for "Jim Bowies" knife. most of the claimed period-correct originals can be traced back to his brother who sort-of cashed in on Jim's posthumous legend and myth.
