A little background first. About 12 years ago when Dave's media came out, I had an old Dillon vibrator. I heard you needed a tumbler for its use. I figured I would use the heavy media in the Dillon until it conked out. Well it is still going strong today and does a fantastic job. One nice thing about it is, I run it without a cover, so cleanup is minimal. I can check anytime to see if the brass is as polished as I want it to be.

I just got some small media to try on my 223 and 22-250 brass. The instructions said to use only approximately 4 0z, add the brass and barely cover with water or it would jam up in the brass. This didn't sound logical, but I tried it and it worked. I am now a believer.....

Paul,
Thanks for the info.. I too use Dave's ceramic and used his solution til I ran out, now use Dawn and Lemishine.  Heard the ss pins did a really good job on the inside and primer pockets.
As for filling the tumbler, once I started filling it 3/4 full with water the peening of case mouths has become only minimal. How are the ss pins on peening?

After a lot of testing with ceramic media and stainless pins in a tumbler I'm convinced one can never completely eliminate peening, only reduce or minimize it.  And stainless pins tend to be worse than ceramic concerning peening.  If, after cleaning, take a very sharp pointed tool and slide it up from inside and outside of the case to the mouth.  If it catches, even slightly, at the case lip then peening is taking place.  For more details on my testing and results, see my article on the following link.

BTW, one of the big advantages of stainless is it can be used to completely clean (including the primer pockets) any size case, .50 caliber down to as small as .380 Auto, possible smaller.  So I use ceramic media to minimize peening with the larger cases and switch to pins when the caliber gets down to around .38 or smaller.

As a bit of clarification, if I read correctly you are running the ceramic media in your vibratory cleaner with water & some polish? Is that correct? What size and how many of the larger cases do you put in and how much liquid (do you cover the cases, for instance)?
Thanks.

My experience agrees with Wayne's. If you chamfer the case mouth at all then the rotary-type tumbler will peen the case mouth to some degree with ceramic and/or ss pins. The longer you run the tumbler the more it peens.

I wonder if it makes a difference whether your Thumler has the high speed motor or the low speed version?

Mine has the lower speed, and peening doesn't seem to be a problem.

Intuitively, it would seem that the slower speed would produce a less violent impact on the cases as they tumble.

Paul,

There is a difference with the slow versus faster motor.  The peening does not progress as fast with the slower motor but it is not eliminated.  I experimented with both motor speeds as noted in my article at

I did not test the small Maurer media with larger brass.
I used about 100 pieces of 22-250 with approx. 4 0z. of media, one cap full of Maurer cleaner and about 2 cups of water (did not quite cover the brass). It cleaned the primer pockets as clean as the larger media. It didn't make the inside as shiny though..............

Thanks. I'll have to give that a try.

corn has always worked best for me in a vibrator tumbler, and lasts the longest.

but since getting a rebel 17, that's all i use - s/s pins, water, and a bit of lemishine.
