The beer in the German pubs was good, and I enjoyed the Beer Museum in Heidelberg, but going to the beer tents at the different fests to sample the local beers… Heaven!!!     Smiley

My  paternal great grandfather came from Bavaria so I feel obligated to drink Busch Bavarian. Besides it's cheaper than Budweiser.   Grin

I would think back in the early days of Schuetzenfests, most of the beers were local draught beers.

I suspect that the bottled beer illustrated in that and other schuetzen-era photos was pretty much "fresh-from-the-keg" full strength draught-brewed beer with NO pasteurization or preservation chemicals added, placed in bottles for transportation and pretty much immediate consumption.
It was  a step up from the open-carry pails of beer.   But it would have been a far cry from modern american "light" bottled and canned beers; though some of the local "craft brewers" have moved back to the more old style methods

They didn't have to worry about open container laws back then.  Grin

Coors was the last, non-pasturized beer that I know of. That's why a lot of states couldn't sell it.

That's what I always drank and it does have some schuetzen roots Smiley

All the bordering states to CA would come across the border to get it.

I'd say that german style (or cezch/austrian/and swiss) beers are as intrinsically tied to "Schuetzen" as gunpowder---
-and maybe even more so since much of the schuetzen sport had deep roots in community war-sports like archery and in parts of Europe, crossbow competition and all of them were associated with beer (and in the case of Great Britain with their longbow, and other arms, traditions----ales and other brewed grain products)
One must remember that beer was MUCH more than a recreational drink and social lubricant.  It was a major part of peasant diet because of its high carbohydrate and other food elements.  It was considered "liquid bread" and calculated into military rations on that basis. some ancient recipes had a brew that was near as thick with fermented starches as a modern "ensure" drink      Bottoms UP guys

It was also much more likely to be sterile.  The water in those days wasn't safe to drink!   Same reason our colonial ancestors drank hard cider.  Alcohol kills the nasties.

-----

I seem to recall being told that in Germany there are no "national" beers, due to trade restrictions.  ALL beer there is locally brewed.  Bottle beer I'm not so sure, but I never saw a place that HAD bottle beer either.

They were good Germans, the style of beer did not matter

Oh, yes it did.   Can you imagine any proper German drinking Bud Lite?   Shocked

It would depend on the circumstance.  If you were stranded on an island and had only salt water or Bud Lite to drink, which would you pick?  I would pick Bud Lite.
Actually, all beer is good, some are better than others, other than that preferably cold, but when in Rome...

Bud Light is nice on a very hot day outside.  It's nice in the bottles too because the keg is so hard to carry Smiley

Rumpleminze  (not sure about the spelling) is an excellent imported German shnapps (don't know about that spelling either!).  It can make you see things that aren't there so be forewarned.

I have no connection with this listing, but I thought they were pretty neat beer drinking accoutrements.
