Looking for a homebrew solution to clean brass with. It has probably been covered before but I can't seem to locate it.

A weak citric acid solution seems to work well for me...

I just use a couple of changes of water - maybe some vinegar, but go easy on it.  Also maybe the "clean shower" sprays. They have some chelating agents in them that will hit on oxidized copper.

The cases usually profit from running a bronze brush in the neck with a drill or drill press after drying out.

That would be pretty aggressive to the brass - and not needed for an ultrasonic cleaner.  I 1st went also for pretty strong solutions, but they just aren't needed, and could potentially damage your brass.

Thanks John Boy. That sounds like the one I saw somewhere before. Will give it a try.

It works  Grin  Do not leave the brass soaking more than an hour or so.  It is eating the brass, that is how it cleans.  Rinse well !!  I used it for years and did not have any problems.

In steel-pin tumblers the usual mix is about half a teaspoon of Dawn and a dash of "Lemishine" to provide some citric acid, added to about a cup of water.    No sign of damage to brass even after an hour or more in the tumbler.

A friend of mine who posts on this site as Macca used to use water mixed with a small amount of citric acid crystals and a little dishwashing soap.  Some time ago he got some stuff called " Amway Loc " and tried that with a small amount of the citric acid crystals and found it to be much better than his usual method. As a test I gave him a small quantity of my Lyman Turbo Sonic to try as a test comparison and he declared that the Amway stuff worked much better than the Lyman Turbo Sonic.  The Amway product is half the price as well. I should point out here that both he and I are cleaning cases that have been used with black powder, in case that makes a difference to the end result.
If you can source the Amway stuff where you are it may be worth a try. I would be interested in hearing about your results.
Mike.

You might be able to purchase it at the grocery in the canning section. It, of course, can be ordered. I think we bought some locally at one time but when it ran out we ordered 5 pounds.

Lemishine.  That's what it is - citric acid crystals.   In the dishwashing detergent section.

Have always wondered about putting soap in an acid solution. Soap is alkaline (I think) and when mixed with acid, either neutralizes the soap, the acid or both. Not enough of a chemist to know if this is correct, but have always washed the cases with soap separately to get rid of the lube .

There are alkaline and acid soaps - but yes, most are alkaline
