Pan lube or pump
Feb 7th, 2015 at 11:50am

Does anyone have an opinion as to accuracy advantage of one method over the other? I have always pan lubed and wonder about the effect of the small amount of lube I always seem to get on the base of the bullet.
Thank You for any advice.

I've always pan lubed, never tried a lube pump. I wipe off the bottom of the bullets on a paper towel as I remove them. Works for me.

I started lubing cast bullets (way back when) using a lubrisizer.  Once I switched to pan lubing, I never looked back.  Like Jerry, I wipe the base of each bullet with a paper towel.

I have never noticed that the excess lube on the bottom of some of my bullets has made any difference. However.....if you're going to pan lube, you need to set up a double boiler to make sure that you don't get your lube too hot, excess heat will ruin most lubes.

+3 on the pan lubing and never looking back.

I bought a cheapo small electric skillet/fondue pot, a stainless wire rack & and straight sided lightweight 10" teflon lined aluminum pot, all for ~$30 and it works great as a double-boiler. Can do my pan lubing at the casting bench.

I was happy with a lube pump until I started shooting bullets with more than one reduced band. Became a hassle to wipe lube off the nose area of the reduced band bullets. A problem which pan lubing solved.

The accuracy advantage is you can spend more time practicing at the range. Wink

I agree. Pan lubing is the way to go. There might be some extreme condition where your bullets were going to get very hot on the way to the match and the lube would need to be reapplied with a pump but I have never run into that situation.

I used a Lube Pump for years and if the Die fits the bullet it is a wonderful tool. I would lube just short of what I needed for a match the night before and what ever I was short at the match so I wouldn't have any lubed bullets when all was said and done. Did it make a differance in accuracy compared to Pan Lubing. Not that I could distinguish, I simply found it to be more convienent. By the time the lube melted in the double boiler and then set to push the bullets out I could lube a couple hundred bullets easily. Due to a signifacant wrist injury and a couple surgeries I was forced to go back to Pan Lubing. Willis Gregory on this site makes a wonderful lube pump and the dies to go with it using your bullets for a perfect fit and he also sells the Dell Lube sticks that drop into the pump.

Yea! For me too, once I tried Pan lubing my Lyman Resizer
Lubers went into hibernation. I do own a couple of Pope lube Pumps but do not have the correct Pope Lube Dies for them. And then they are messy. I find that Pan Lubing works best for me when I am not in a rush. Lay the pullets out in a Pan while the Lube is coming up to temperature. Then when ready pour the wax. Then go to bed. Put the pan with Bullets in the wax aside and wait for a convenient time to push them out. Clean the base with Paper towel as others do. I store my Bullets in Sierra bullet boxes they store neatly and the Boxes last forever. Regards FITZ. Smiley

For schuetzen and breech seating, I like to lube the bullets I use just before I load them.  Charlie Dell's adaptation of the old Pope design is my lube pump of choice... being carried on now by Willis (singleshot) Gregory.

When I'm prepping a bunch of bullets for muzzle loading or making BP cartridges, I pan lube with Emmert's Lube as  taught to me by Dale McGee.

This is what I have found works for me... YMMV!  Wink

I pan lube with the oven at 185°F.

When the lube has cooled and harden, knock the whole cake with the bullets out.

Tip upside down. Push working around the cake until it is all the way down to the counter.

Pick up the bullets & wipe off the bases.

Put the cake back into the pan. Holes are ready to take the next batch of bullets.

45 caliber - 35 minutes. Timer shuts off oven. The heat finishes melting the lube. Let them slow cool/harden with door close.

38 caliber - 30 minutes

If you think that pan lubing is messy wait till you try a pump. I have always found that pan lubing with the oven set at 200 works well. The advantage is that there are no voids if you use the oven method. I have never seen pump bullets that didn’t have voids. Ditto what Jerry and Jack said just wipe them off with a paper towel as you are freeing them from the cake.

Pans were around before lube pumps were invented.  I wonder why they continuned making pumps after they tried it the first time?  Cheesy  Did I mention I pan lube or do I even need to   Cheesy

Maybe lube pumps are for shooters with too much time on their hands.  Ledball

Another pan luber here!

I started pan lubing and then tried a lubrisizer to do GC bullets, then went right back to pan lubing and sizing seperately with a push through die in my arbor press.
