I have a E.Remington & Sons No.1 Rolling Block Sporting Rifle that appears to be all original including the barrel sights.
The dovetail for the front sight is .454” and the dovetail for the rear sight is .290”
Does anybody know if the dovetail sizes on the sporting rifles were standard, or did they vary, and were the front and rear dovetail sizes the same, or did they differ as on my rifle?
Is there a standard distance from the muzzle to the front dovetail, as on the Winchester Model 1885?
From the No.1 Sporting Rifles I have seen, this distance seems to vary.

I've seen some variety in dovetail sizes. It sometimes seems to be common at one end or the other during certain time periods, but it's not a certain size for all of them. Mine is an early sporter in .44-77 SBN, and in the 74xx range. My rear sight seems to measure very close to the .290" you have. My front sight measures more like .445-.446"
Mine is without doubt original, and well worn. I doubt it's ever had anything changed in it's long life, unless it happened when it was very young! It's a rocky mountain blade front sight, and rocky mountain barrel rear sight, with harpoon elevator. 34" extra heavy barrel, with single set rigger, and never drilled for a tang sight.
My front sight seems to be about 1.15" from the muzzle on center.
