8x58R dies?
Feb 3rd, 2015 at 4:24pm
Print Post
Gentlemen;

I have just gotten a Swedish Rolling Block chambered in 8x58R.

I am requesting either brass (unlikely) or dies to form cases from 45/90 brass.

Thanks for any help.

Forrest

Can anyone help?

I picked up a set of CH4D 8x58 R die set from Buffalo Arms Co. which I used to make cases from Starline 45-90 cases.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

You can own your own set for $82.74.
U.S. Homeland Security doesn't like us Canadians shipping firearms stuff across the border.

Is that Danish Krag round the same as the one for the rolling block action?
I thought there was a difference in the two cases.
But, I've been wrong before.
Thanks,
Dave

Yes it is the same case.

The case fits perfectly in my 1867 Swedish Rolling Block that was converted to 8x58 R in 1896.

But you have to be careful since some of these Danish Krag cases were loaded too heavy for a Rolling Block.
Originally the case had lighter presure loads for the 1867 Swedish/Norwegian Rolling Blocks.
In 1908 the cartridge was loaded with higher pressure loads for use in the Krag-Jorgenson rifles.

Wikipedia: The cartridge was developed in Denmark in 1888 using round-nosed bullets with 4 grams (62 gr) of gunpowder, and adopted the following year by Denmark in the Krag-Jørgensen rifle. Sweden implemented a major arsenal rebuilding of Remington Rolling Block rifles for the 8×58mmR, and Norway experimentally compared 8×58mmR Remington Rolling Block conversions to the Jarmann M1884. Norway adopted the 6.5×55mm Krag-Jørgensen rifle in 1894, and Sweden replaced the 8×58mmR with the 6.5×55mm Swedish Mauser rifle in 1898. Denmark modernized military loading of the 8×58mmR in 1908 using smokeless powder with spitzer bullets;[2] and Danish troops were still armed with the 8×58mmR when Germany invaded in 1940.[1]

This question may have already been asked and answered, but, was the 8x58R Rolling Block load used by the Swedes black or smokeless powder?

The 62 grains would have been black powder. That much smokeless would destroy a Rolling Block.

I am far away from my 1887 Swedish military reports re 8X58RD, so this is partly from memory.

Initial load was a compressed BP charge that was developed to hold chamber pressures below 2000atms. Compressed load was developed because ALL tested loose BP loads generated too much pressure for Rem RB, some up to 3000atms. Bullet was mantled with soft Pb alloy core. See most recent thread on Swedish Civilian Weapons by NiklasP, where much more is presented from same 1887s reports as I have.

Almost from start various early nitro powder loads were tested. The few data I have seen thus far suggests these initial powders were simiar to 4759 in both weight of charge and muzzle velocity. Much, much later Norma, etc. developed nitro loads using basically modern nitro powders to greatly increase ballistics while keeping with 2000atms. Such loads by Norma are available in thread on Scandinavian Military Weapons on Gunboards by kriggevär.

Does anyone have any info on availability of dies or loading specs for the 8X58 rimmed Sauer?

For dies, I would check with ch4d, they do list them. According to COW, 155gr Lyman 316475gc, 20.0 grs 4198, 1700 fps. Original loading was black using a 196 bullet.
