Shipping a German Schuetzen rifle

Howdy All
I am about to place my Buchel Meister up for sale. My main concern is how to ship it without damage. It won't fit a standard hard case. The thumb pulpit would likely be broken. Any advice on a good shipping case?

Thanks Tom

Probably going to need to build a box to ensure it will ship well. Since these break down easily, I'd split it in two halves also, as getting it shorter will not only protect the gun and stocks, but will make shipping cheaper. I always remove buttstocks when shipping, and wrap them separately. It's not unusual for guns to be broken at the wrist when some goofball steps on a long package and breaks the stock!
I build my shipping boxes from 1/4 plywood, with reinforcement in the corners, and solid 1"-1.5" wood ends. I glue and pin nail them together, and then screw the lids on. I also wrap them with packing tape at each end, and a couple times in between. I hate sending a gun off, and the buyer getting it damaged.

I like to disassemble rifles and then build up a solid block made of layers of sheet foam insulation with individual cutouts for the barreled action, the stock components,, the buttplate and action parts.  metal parts are all cleaned and lightly oiled than wrapped in cotton cloth or those synthetic micro-fiber cloths.  Stock and forend is cleaned and waxed then wrapped as well. the foam block is well wrapped in tape and plastic then put it a heavy cardboard box built to enclose it tightly and solidly.
It makes a pretty unobtrusive package.  (you could even send the stock  and the barreled action in different packages)   nothing moves rattles or says "gun inside" to the package handlers.  Its just a little longer that the of length of the barreled action.

I have sent a couple and received a couple.   On two sent out I enclosed photocopied reassembly instructions for the DeHass books.

Needless to say I discussed this at length with the buyers and advised shippers who were ending stuff to me.

I have limited experience with shipping long guns, but I do find it a nerve wracking experience myself. Especially with a gun hard to replace.

Thanks for all the good advice. I think I will list it locally for now, and hope I don't have to ship. Anyone in South Texas looking for a Buchel?

Thanks Again Tom
