OK I’m going to air out a pet peeve. It’s not 32-40 WCF I don’t care what Winchester calls it. It isn’t Winchester’s to name it’s a Ballard caliber and it’s a 32-40 Ballard. Just because Winchester wants to act like Harvey Donaldson and claim to have invented everything since the wheel doesn’t make it so.

Thanks John, It's also a pet peeve of mine, I try very hard to never refer to the 32/40 & 38/55 as Winchester cartridges.  Ledball

I have two Rifles chambered in 32-40 and before I was able to buy brass I ran 32SPL brass into the 32-40 sizing die and it instantly became 32-40 brass albeit a little short but the neck was the correct size. The rifles never seemed to notice the difference. Shortly after that Midway got in a supply of Starline 32-40 brass and I snagged some of that.

I must have missed something here... although I personally talked to the Starline folks at a couple of NRA meetings, they didn't seem at all inclined to make them.  They did, however, make a run or two of 38-55 which can be thought of as a "38 Basic" case from which everything down through 32-40 and 25-35 to 22 Zipper may be formed.

Of course about 20 years ago at a NRA show a rep from Winchester-Olin told me that they would "never" make another run of 32-40s and within 6 months had accepted the first order from Graf for a run of a half million rounds of same... they are still periodically making those runs, just not very often.  Undecided  Never say never!

If you want to get the attention of the folks at Starline, I would guess an order of at least 250,000 pieces would be a good start.  I'm not sure the proposed buy of 20,000 would even raise a yawn.

Froggie

PS  Ballard (Marlin) probably developed the cartridge (from the pre-existing 38-55) but Winchester sure did make a difference in making it popular.  Marlin discontinued production of the Ballard just a very few years after they first developed the cartridge, but Winchester and even Stevens went on for at least a couple of decades making it popular.  I've seen it called the 32-40 BMW.  Cool

Thanks for the heads up here. I just found 7 20 round boxes of WW unprimed and 2 bags of 50. I'm off to GB to get that extortion money. It sounds traitorous but at $2.50 a pc I can buy alot of other brass and when it gets back down to $0.50 I can stock back up (I typically use 30-30s anyway for BSing). Let me know if I am wrong headed.

Thank you,
Charles

You are right Colorado. The brass is Winchester not Starline. I bought it from Midway last year. I don't often shoot the two rifles I have in that caliber. As I have said before I don't like the cartridge much. It is just too big for the small amount of smokeless powder we use in them. I think the 8.15 x 46R is a much better round. When we go to the range, which is only about once a month since it is so far, I usually take a 38-55 or 40-65.  I like to ring that gong.

I don't know why a manufacturer would be interested in running an obsolete caliber when they have shortages of popular calibers?

Quality Cartridge in MD has it listed on their website as a caliber they will run when they have sufficient backorders. I have a box of their 8.15x46R.  They are quite satisfactory for Schuetzen & bench loads.  I would buy from them again.

I have some new Starline 38-55 long (2.125) in bags of 100 that I will sell for $80 shipped. I have 400 pieces I will part with.  Dennis
