How does unique powder work in a forty five colt  with a 250 gn bullet in a single shot rifle with all modern parts ( Ruger #1)? Thanks for your answer, Hank45

Don't have a rifle chambered in 45 Colt, but Unique works just fine in my 45 Colt SAA's with the 454190 and 454424 moulds.
Also managed to accumulate a decent supply of older 45 Colt Rem/UMC semi-balloon head cases that I use for black powder loads, though those cases were originally loaded by the factory with smokeless powder that looked like Unique, with a paper-faced felt wad over the powder charge, and 255 grain hollow-based bullets.

I've burned up a LOT of Unique in several different big bore pistol loads. It was my go-to powder since I started shooting them nearly 50 years ago.   I've used up a lot of my 44m Unique-charged ammo in my little Ruger lever-action carbine-----I need to sit down and do a marathon 44m reloading session later this winter.
I think a restocked #3 in 44M (or one of the .45 LC and its larger variations) would make a perfect little woods rifle---an American "stalking rifle" for game up and including midwest whitetail.

Thats about all I used it for though.  After reading about those gun-blow-ups I probably became over-conscious of small volume charges of "faster" powders in large volume cases.
When I started my single shot journey with an early version Miroku-wall in 45-70 I saw some Unique loads listed,  but thinking of it as a "pistol powder" I shied away and settled on 5744------I bought a whole bunch of it at a real good price and never really looked back at Unique.

I shoot Unique in a repro 1873 Win. Shoots fine although a little dirty.

I use Unique in a dozen calibers.  When you add a small square of paper towel to position the powder it also raises the pressure slightly AND causes Unique to burn VERY cleanly (as in .405Win - a loooong case).

I found something similar with my 5744 loads,   breech seating my 45-70 left a dirty bore  (even with a cork wad seated slightly off the powder charge).
Shooting tight-neck fixed ammo apparently raised the pressure enough to get a clean/complete burn.

But BreechSeating WAS more accurate even with a dirty bore and probably slightly reduced pressure.   Out of curiosity I pushed the debris, which always had a few unburned grains of powder, out with a dry patch and weighed it.  Shot to shot, the weight of the debris was awfully consistent. Huh   Upping the powder charge a bit reduced but did not obviate the debris.

Try 7.5-8.0 Unique and life will be good.
Use a firm roll crimp and a std primer.

Have been using Unique in handgun loads with cast bullets for 50 years. There are two important things to accuracy and clean burning. A good crimp with cases of a consistent lgt to make neck tension uniform and a powder measure that throws accurate charges. Unique is not the easiest powder to throw consistent charge weights with. It takes a good measure and practice with it. In a RCBS Uniflow I like the small capacity chamber and use a double tap on the bottom stroke as well as the up stroke. Have used it in 38spl, 357M, 41M, 44spl, 44M, and 45acp. It's a good powder in handgun cartridges. Also have been told that it works great in small capacity rifle cartridges with cast bullet loads.

The   Lafflin & Rand powder history thread posted yesterday in the "general" section has some absolutely FASCINATING background on Unique and a few other of our old go-to when all else fails powders.

Over the years many of the newsstand gun magazines have had articles on loading for pistol/rifles in the same cal/cartridge.  I believe that both RIFLE and HANDLOADER have done some serious work on that topic.  some of the regular feature "Favorite Load" articles maybe?

You might also find more info on pistol loads in carbines on cast bullet site, and even more specific info on a couple of the dedicated ruger sites  I know that one of them has a LOT of data on 44m in rifles and carbines.

I've shot a lot of Unique in my pistols, but don't own a rifle in .45 Colt. My S&W Model 25-2 in .45 Colt is extremely accurate with a light 185 gr. SWC, and 6 grains of Unique. I use 8.5 grs. with a 250 gr. bullet and it's also a accurate load, and not too hot.

I've used Unique in 44 Mag revolver loads and 45 Colt loads in a Unerti Schuetzen single shot low wall I had. That powder always worked for me! I use a RCBS Lil' Dandy (revolver) or Belding&Mull (rifle) as powdah measures.

Dirty, dirty, dirty ... but the performance on paper never knew it Wink !

All of my single shots shoot one tiny ragged hole with cast bullets ... it's just the following shots that tend to open up my groups Wink ...
