For the sight collector.

That is one weird looking sight - new to me.

It's diffenently not weird to me. It's made by Mossberg. They are quality for their period and the scope itself, has it's roots at Stevens (Mossberg worked there). The front turret, is excellent quality and the rear, works something like a U-joint, it clamps to the tube and swivels in two axis.

The thread pitch is, as I remember 72 per inch so, that it doen't need wide spacing.

They are made in both friction and click adjustments. I own about 20 of the turrets.

Hi Frank,

Unusual or odd are probably better descriptors, and that applies to the mounting hardware, not the main scope body.  I'm not a scope collector but have looked at a bunch of classical scopes and flipped through books on old scopes and never ran across this type of configuration, so it struck me as unusual.  I've got Fecker scopes on several of my rifles.

I just pulled out Nick Stroebel's book, Old Gunsights & Rifle Scopes, opened it up to the Mossberg section and could not locate a photo of a scope with the same mounting hardware.

I've got a couple of these also.  All of the bases I've seen have the word "Newton" cast into it inside an oval.  Always wondered if they were made by the Newton rifle company as a side job or just what the story was.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Same here. I have a couple of them also, and they used to be almost worthless. Most shooters thought they were crude, and not easy to make adjustments, and I passed up a lot of these mounts at various gun shows for a few dollars. Wish I had any idea they'd someday become collectible back then!
