What type of paper do you use under the primer during the seating  process?  Thanks for your answer Hank

I stopped putting any type of paper in the primer pocket to decrease the brisance of the primer ignition.  Shooting BPCR where proper brisance is needed to deflagurate the powder column - determined that with and without the SD's and average velocity read nearly the same

Using the proper primer, powder dependent, will generate the proper explosion brisance for smokeless reloads

Shoot only BP in my BP rifles and don't use no stinking paper between my LR primers (either inside the primer pocket or inside the case) and the powder. Wink My testing has shown no difference on the target either way so I don't waste the time. YMMV.

I place a piece of newspaper over top of the flash hole on the inside.

The BP packed into the flash hole can act like a fuse.

With the primer burning through the paper I get more consistent ignition and much smaller group sizes when I test shooting cases with or without the newspaper over the flash hole.

This may also be due to me compressing my powder .240". There may not be as much of a fuse type problem of the flash hole where the BP is not compacted as much.

Hank, the big difference between BP and smokeless is that with BP you will fill your case. BP also needs some compression to get the best consistency out of it. There really isn't any hard and fast rule on how much compression you will need. Swiss likes just a little, other brands like some to a lot. Best way is to fill your case to just above where the base of the bullet will be, add a wad and compress to about where the bullet base will be. Unless your bullet will be a slip fit in the case, when you seat the bullet it will compress the powder just a couple of thousandths of an inch. Then do not change your compression depth just add more powder to get more compression. Your rifle will tell you when you find the combination that it likes. If your not sure how to figure your compression depth, make up a dummy round that fits where you want the bullet to in the chamber. Then subtract the case length and the bullet length from the overall length. You will end up with a negative number but that is your compression depth less the thickness of your over powder wad.
Hope this helps.
Sam

When i use pistol primers i punch them through .008 art paper. If i use rifle primers i drop a news print wad in the case to keep powder out of the flash hole.
