Would it be safe to shot a  20 guage shotgun shell  (slug and shot) in a Winchester low wall made in 1898? Thanks for your answer, Hank45

Hank there are all kinds of 20 g slugs.  Most new 20 shotgun shells operate at lot higher pressure than old ammunition.   You have to watch  o/a too old standard was 2 5/8. New 2 3/4 and even 3 inch.

For my SxS 20's I load low preassure lighter shot loads.  3/4 oz at about 1160 FPS. Cut the hulld down to 2 5/8 You can also buy low pressure short 20 from RST

No reflection on High Walls in 20 it may be fine just look out for hot loads

Personally, I'd consider it in an original Hi-Wall,  in a Lo-Wall   NOT, but that my own opinion.
Modern made versions in modern alloy steel etc might be a different story

Hank, The answer is NO. 20 gauge has about the same cartridge thrust as a modern 30-30. Too much for an original Low-Wall.

And let's not forget that the thread root diameter of the .845 thread diameter is .763 and the chamber diameter of the modern 20 ga is .698. At .032 per side theres not much metal left to hold the barrel.
