New scammer on Armslist, beware

They haven't put up any single shots that I'm aware of, but have recently listed several lever actions. Most notably, a Whitney-Scharf.
All listings appear to have photos and details lifted form legitimate auctions from different sellers on Gun Broker .
If you look up the Whitney on Armslist and GB, you will notice that both guns have the SAME SERIAL NUMBER.

I don't look in on Armslist, but do they have a way to report sellers like this? If they don't have some oversight, I'd avoid using their service at all.

Just went there and looked in their forum section. Seems this practice is done more than this one time. Others complaining of Gunbroker pictures being used there to sell guns people don't own. I'd steer clear of Armslist, as it appears they have no policing of their firearms postings.

Yes, they supposedly DO have a security system to report suspicious listings.
I alerted them as soon as I realized what was going on.

I also alerted the GB sellers, and since the scammer gave me a mailing address to send payment, I contacted the local police department of that metropolitan area.
Maybe, just maybe, they can nab the stupid b-tards.

I saw those discussions, and one fellow made a good suggestion: place some sort of identifying mark on your photos; so they are a dead giveaway if someone lifts them.
He called it a "watermark".
It must be what Lock Stock and Barrel does, because their photos have a stylized LSB superimposed over the photo.
A person might need Photo Shop or something to do that.

If someone has a picture anywhere on the internet, some crook will figure a way to try and cheat someone by using the pictures!
A few years ago I got a call from a friend who asked why I was selling my Camaro on Seattle Craigslist? I told him I wasn't selling it anywhere, and he told me to look at Seattle CL to see. Sure enough, there was an ad for my car, with several pictures he'd taken off a automotive web site I had posted pictures on.
I contacted the seller by email, and got his phone number. Called him up and tried to arrange a deal to buy my car, but he gave me a story about how he was "out of town" and needed a small deposit to hold it at this fantastic price.
I contacted Seattle PD and gave them the phone number I received, but never heard anymore about it. It did disappear off CL soon though.

It's pretty interesting, this scammer situation.
I emailed the state attorney general's crime hotline, I emailed the metropolitan police, and I finally CALLED the local crime hotline and spoke with a real human being.
They seemed very interested and appreciative that I called about this situation, and assured me a detective would be calling me back to take my info.
It's been almost a week and nuthin' Angry
In the mean time, the scammer however has been most proactive.
Until just recently, they had kept up a daily communique with me, questioning whether I sent payment or not, and even offering to accept a different method of payment if it would be more convenient for me.
I ran out of excuses to keep them on the hook; and they stopped emailing, so the heck with it.
If the cops follow up, they follow up. If not, oh well; I tried.

Real life Cops are much different than the TV cops of CSI or Forensic Files.

I'm sure you'll get far more response from the scammer than the police!

Ya gotta be so darn careful!  There was an episode a week or so ago, Georgia I believe, where an old couple went to pick up the Mustang he'd wanted for years and found on CL.  They were both murdered, money stolen.  Car never existed.  I do believe they caught the scumbag.  GW

Inside every old person is a young person wondering what the h*** happened.

I've made sure not to reveal my location, but that doesn't mean that it eliminates the possibility for retribution from a prosecuted scammer. They have all the time in the world to track somebody down; if they have that much ambition.
Perhaps it's best if this whole thing just dries up and blows away.

Well, I finally received a phone call from a detective.
And it was very informative regarding how clever these scammers can be.
I'd like to pass along some of what he alluded to, as it might be helpful.
Did you know:
That if a seller requests that you  send a postal money order by Priority Mail and asks for the tracking number and serial number of that MO ,that  they can then contact the receiving PO and change WHERE and TO WHO that MO gets sent to, after it's been sent ?

That if a MO serial number is given out at time of mailing, that the recipient can go to a check cashing establishment and draw cash against that MO, WITHOUT EVEN HAVING IT.

The detective also talked about the difficulty in tracking down email and IP addresses, because of all the wireless servers. I don't understand all that; but the money order monkey business made sense.
Now I know why my scammer was insistent on sending the MO by priority Mail at first; and when that didn't work, they were happy to take a Western Union money gram.
