Today was an excellent day at the range for shooting my CPA #52. We had the most still air I've seen for months. I managed several 200m targets with under a minute of vertical. The targets would not be competitive when shot against smokeless bench guns ( I'm shooting BP ), but I'm making some progress. I'm coming to the conclusion that I need a very slightly heavier trigger pull than I do when shooting this rifle offhand. I'm wondering what the rest of you shooting CPA #52's think of trigger weight for benchrest. thanks, Chris.

I like ~ 4 ounces for benchrest shooting. I deal with the same for offhand...but I'm not a great (even good) offhand shot. This is with my Pope High Comb stock on my CPA. JerryH AKA Jerry_H

I'm not a complete idiot, some of my parts are missing.

All my rifles are 6 to 8 oz. trigger pull. Even an 8 oz. pull can pull you off target when shooting off hand. With practice you will get you used to the quick release of the trigger. Accurate shooting off hand is better with a light trigger than a heavier one. You need to develop your skills not to brush the trigger and to become use to the trigger pull weight. Going to the heavier trigger will not help you shoot better off hand. And it is just as important when shooting bench. You need to time your release for specific wind conditions. Heavier triggers delay the release time and you cannot shoot accurately by catching specific intermittent wind changes.

My DST triggers are about 7 - 8 oz but, I don't have enough feeling left in my finger to reliably feel a 4 oz. What I do on the bench is come in on the side of the trigger, so I can feel it, then gentily push to the rear with both side and rear pressure and don't wrap my thumb around the stock. Frank

I have mine set light, when I shot offhand I kept my trigger so I could just feel it when it went off. I keep my bench guns the same I think that the less you disturb the gun the better you will shoot. To be clear I shoot heads up once I set the gun I don’t touch it at all until I pinch the trigger. While learning this technique I was told “John nothing good happens when you touch the gun”. 40 Rod

Thanks very much. When I originally got the rifle the trigger was set very light, enough that I couldn't feel it at all so I increased it just enough that I could feel it before it went off. I think it's currently good for offhand, but I've been shooting way more from a bench than offhand truth be told. I am not yet using a muzzle clamp, just a front rest with sandbags, and still grip the rifle to control recoil. When pulling the trigger at it's current weight, I find that I'm unable to gradually increase pressure until it breaks. I can rest my finger on the trigger but any additional force will cause it to break. It sounds like this is about how you guys have it set up then. I'm sure this stuff is pretty obvious to you guys, but there are a lot of little details for me to get right. I definitely understand the part about minimizing the disturbance to the rifle. Thanks again for the experienced advice. I appreciate it. Chris.

When buying a action some years back I ask a very good shooter at Beeson Range about it. Wasn't a set trigger but not real heavy, very crisp and NO creep. It was for a bench rifle only so I was told no need for a very light trigger for a bench rifle, or set trigger. As long as the trigger can have pressure put on it and not pull the rifle out of battery backwards. And that would allow you to get off the trigger if a change in conditions caught you, where a lighter trigger would have let go and you were screwed. I have never weighed it, I might someday, just for the heck of it. That was some of the best advice I was given, and have kept up and even outscored the guy giving the advise, something I am proud of.
