Pac-Nor Barrels

Has anyone had a SS built with a Pac-Nor barrel? Especially a 3 groove one (or any 3 groove maker).

I had impulse buy about a week ago and got a 338 X 14 twist to try out. I'm sure there is enough purchase on a jacketed bullet but, I've started to wonder if 3 grooves will hold a soft lead bullet. The lands are as narrow as a 6 groove Douglas so, there will be very little distortion of a cylindrical bullet.

Hello Frank,
A lot of A3 03 Springfield's were made with two groove barrels and on testing against four groove barrels little difference in accuracy was found to exist.  The fewer the grooves the less the bullet is distorted which may lead to stabilisation problems and some loss of accuracy, the lead core being distorted. It probably didn't matter unless you were shooting Palma Matches.
I'd check with Pac-Nor to see if they recommend 2 grooves for lead bullets. I assume you are shooting Schuetzen or other traditional methods of competition with relatively low velocity, so would surmise a not very hard bullet would be used. If so you may not get enough grip on the bullet with a two groove barrel. Just a thought.

2--groove lancaster barrels shot quite well, both with BP and with nitro, jacketed and lead - and they had close to no grooves (oval bore).
I wouldn't worry....  It is pretty hard for a bullet not to follow rifling.

Trapdoors have 3 grooves.

The chambering will be my 33 ELCO, I've had pretty good results with it and plan to put it on my DST Clerke/Pingry action. I think it will make a good switch barrel rifle.

I was hoping that someone had some experiance with one of the modern 3 groove barrels (this one the lands are only about .050 wide) or just Pac-Nor barrels in general.

Dale Reynolds uses a Pac-Nor barrel but it is not 3-groove.

Thank you, Jeff. That's good to know. I like the company (especially since they're in OR) but, hadn't heard of thier use in our sport.

I wish Dale was on this forum, I would have lots of questions for him Smiley

FWIW, Pope used an odd number of grooves and narrow lands.  What about the shape of the grooves?  Corners, etc.?

And if you get a Pac-Nor barrel, keep us (esp. me) posted.  I have been thinking about one myself.

Pac-Nor has a good rep with high power service rifle shooters as a less-expensive, but quality alternative to Kreiger, Bartlein, etc.
When Badger went down, do I recall correctly that Pac-Nor purchased what was left? If so, wonder if their single-shot barrels are made on the old Badger machines.

The Remington 2-hrove Springfield barrels have an excellent reputation for accuracy with cast bullets.

I have a 4-groove Remington 03A3.  One pair of grooves measures .308.  The other pair measures .3085.  With 2 grooves, the error rate is greatly reduced.

Really? I didn't know that Douglas made a 3 groove. What caliber is it?

Ledball, what I was wanting to know is, what chambering it is. Or, haven't yo installed on a action yet.

Thank you,
