25-20 WCF Load help needed!

I got a curve ball thrown at me this week. CPA sent me my new barrel and it is a 25-20 wcf and not a 25-20 single shot. We got our info crossed somewhere. Called Gail and she told me to shoot it and maybe I will be happy with it. I need some load suggestions. I'm going to be shooting a Hoch 105 grain bullet, breach seated. I have 4227,No 9, and Ramshot Enforcer for powders on hand.

I believe you mean 25WCF if so Jerry_H on this site would be your best go to person. What he has accomplished with his 25 WCF in competition ( 4-200yd. 250's ) currently sets him apart from all others.

You were correct, John. If you don't like a post you can always delete it. Bet I delete half my posts.

Thanks dad, so similar to 25-20 ss loads.

You can also ask Gail. She's sharper than 99.9% of us Wink

I have the same barrel and am getting good results but it is still early.  Do a search and you will find some posts from last year.   Brass is not so common.  I'm using 9 something grains of A4100 but that is hard to find right now.   There are posts on alternatives.  I find I have to cast quite hot to get good bullets but not a real issue.

Jerry H is the guru of this caliber.

Have fun!

Wade,

I'm using 9.6 grains of AA4100 with a 120 gr. Mos bullet. According to Western Powder Ramshot Enforcer is the same as AA4100 (you should call them just to verify that yourself) and I would give that a try before the other powders you have. Remington or Federal Match primers work best for me.

I'm not sure how much to advise you to use with your 105 gr. bullet. Start well below my charge weight and work your way up slowly. Your rifle will let you know when you find the right velocity. My rifle shoots best right at 1660 fps but that's a pretty stout load and tends to be a little hard on brass. It's safe in my rifle but not in a couple of others that I know of. Other shooters out here are running their bullets around 1500 fps with good results also.

I would highly recommend using Remington brass as Winchester brass only lasts around 10 shots for me. I can usually get 200 plus firings out of a Remington case, sometimes as many as 500 before the case starts to fail.

My loading data shows what works for me, but I'm not saying it'll work for you or be safe in your rifle. YMMV.  Proceed with caution and have fun. You'll like your 25-20WCF.

Thank You Jerry and the rest of all that replied so far! Like I said, it's not really what I wanted but it sounds like it maybe better for me. Only time will tell. I do have a starting point and that is what I really needed to move forward with this cartridge. Anymore hints and pointers are always welcomed!

I might add that Jerry's Douglas Barrel is a 10 Twist.

Jerry,
Does your Douglas 1:10 twist have 6 lands and grooves.  I don't have a 25wcf but thinking real hard about putting one together.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

J Louis is right about my barrel being a Douglas 10 twist. It's a XX with 6 lands and grooves and is finished at 28".

The rifle it's on is a CPA. Chambering was done with a borrowed lever gun reamer.

Thanks Jerry
Looking forward to building a 25 WCF in the near future. Right now still working out the kinks on a .38-50 Rem-Hep but the .25 is next on the list.
