32-20 - cartridge boxes and bullet trays, moulds

Print Post
What are .30 - .32 shooters using to store the cast bullets?  I've recently started casting bullets for my .30-20 and instead of throwing them all in a coffee can (not really good for accuracy), I'd like to store them in containers that will protect the individual bullets.
Also, if anyone has a .30 mould for sale with wide lube grooves (BP shooting), at around 150-170 grs, I could be interested.
On that point, anyone have any experience with the .30 Pope bullet , Style lyman 308403?  That one might just be a good one to maximize case capacity while having ample lube grooves for BP...

I've been using 9mm boxes that come from the range. I prefer the boxes from Herters or the Russian steel cased ammo, a little smaller than the CCI type box.

I also use the MTM boxes for 9mm.   They work well.

If I have to travel far with them I place a folded sheet of paper towel in the lid to keep some tension on the bullets so they can't move.   This is particularly good when I shoot at the range near my cabin which Requires driving long distances over rough roads.

Midway sells bullet boxes with styrofoam liners-kinda like the kind that come with factory ammo. I use .38 Special to store bullets under .38 caliber and .45 auto for everything over. Works good.

I will second the MTM but only the newer, heavier one that actually have a hindge and not the thin platic as shown in the Buffalo Arms picture.

With the hinged ones, they will fold back a lay on the bench or you can just snap the lid off. The plactic hindge is always creeping down and gets in the way.

I use MTM's 38 special for most, go to the 45 ACP box for some cast bullets. 40's and up it's needed 38/55 bullets if pre lubed work a bit better out of the 45 box too.  Built in hinge cheaper MTM is the way to go for quanity storage. I have dozens.

The Lids do creep shut.  Our club has a "open bolt indicator" rule. I keep a dozen sets of foam ear plugs in my range bag each with a bright zip tie wraped around for shooters who don't have a OBI.  Cheap and effective

They work good laid in the MTM's lid hinge, keeps it open when working out of the box.

Don't over look dumpster diving at the range in addition to the Styrofoam trays @ Midway and reload plastic boxes.
At the range - trays & boxes for all calibers
If you want to get spiffy - turn the boxes inside out and make a computer label for the box
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)  PS: Also seat them at 0.987 for the lever rifles

Gert,

I have had the .30 Pope mould, mine marked 311403, for years.  It does very well if you approach it as a Schuetzen bullet, not as something to stuff in the end of your .30-06 case.  It works best with a slower twist, not the military 1 in 10".  Is there anything special you need to know?

Waterman

I also use the Midway pistol cartridge boxes with the styrofoam inserts to store my cast bullets.

So basically the intention seems to be to use it as-cast, and just use the case to push it into the barrel (close to breechseating) with a load of powder behind, in an unsized, primed case?
I would consider it for shooting with my BP 30-20 as it would allow me to maximize case capacity, and it also seems to have ample lube capacity.  How do you get your best results?
What attracts me here is the fact that I would be able to use a relatively heavy bullet with full powder capacity (20+ grains)  which would allow me to stretch the range to 200m, maybe more.

I use old plastic inserts for small caliber pistol cartridges as John Boy described. I grab the inserts and boxes out of the trash at my gun club, and just reuse them.
I also have some small plastic snap top boxes I get nuts and bolts in from the hardware store. They don't have dividers, but I set the bullets in rows inside, until the box is full. Most will hold at least 100 bullets in neat rows.

If you are going to breech seat your 32-20, you should make up a special seater, using a fired case, something to push against the bullet (wood dowel?) and maybe some sort of handle to allow you to use your hand to seat the bullet.  The 32-20 cases are too thin to use loaded cases to seat your bullets.

I use these for all my bullets (they are sold in the various calibers). Can write on the side with a felt-tip. I generally toss the boxes. Been using the first 25 for 6-7 years.
