32-20 Startiing Loads for CPA
Jan 13th, 2015 at 10:36am
Print Post
I've shot in CBA military matches for a few years and am moving up to a 32-20 CPA, still a few weeks off from delivery.  Powders on hand include IMR 4227, 2400, and a small hoard of 4759.  I'm looking for 4100, H108, 300MP and AA9.  I've not found much load information here; are there other places to look for ranges of load data?

I apologize for the newbie questions - but it keeps the sport growing!

Hi Pentz,

AA4100 and #9 are good powders to start with. I shoot mine with 11.7gr of #9 with a 205gr Moss spitzer and a 210gr sweged bullet. I've had decent results with 4100 with the same bullets up to 12.8gr. Start a little lower and work your way up at .01gr intervals till you find what works in your rifle.

I was getting pressure signs past 11.8 of #9 and 12.9gr 4100 so be careful.

Regards,
Bob

Paul Shuttleworth, in his essay on his new 32/20 CPA, recommends 10.7 grains of Accurate Arms #9 powder.  I believe he is shooting a 200 grain bullet in the 1-25 alloy.

I would suggest calling Paul or Gail and ask them.  They know best.

Hi Rich,

10.7gr of #9 worked great for me as well at 100yds. This was the load Paul suggested I start with. The only issue is the bullet goes subsonic before 200yds. Accuracy at that range was not nearly as good as 11.7.

You might also look for 296/H110 powder, I use 10.2 gr (1408 fps w/180 gr bullet) with great results in her 30 cal 32/20

Bob,
How do your cases last with 11.7 grains of #9?  I told Gail that some folks were only getting 10 to 12 reloads out of a case and she said it's because of too much pressure.
What weight bullet are you using?

Rich,

I have 15 firings on some of my cases. I'm shooting a 205gr Mos spitzer. I purchased a broken case extractor because of all the case failure reports. So far (knock on wood) I haven't used it.

I do inspect each time for signs of case failure. I have some cases that are developing lose primer pockets (Starline). My Remington cases have 10 firings and so far so good.

I believe Paul's load is 12.8 of 4100 in his .32-20. I don't remember any mention of separations/failures in our conversations regarding loads.
