If it were brass it would be all tarnished and looking bad. I've been fooled by the yellow tarnish on silver. It does that.

If it is silver, there is a product called Silver Dip sold at Jewellers and some Hardware Stores. Wet a Q Tip with the chemical and gently stroke the brass/silver plating with it after a few minutes wash off the chemical and oil the action. This method is far less aggressive than other polishing compounds and it is cheap. You wife may have some already for cleaning her silver jewellery. It cleans the metal rather than removing part of it. Good luck.

Gday,
         Just to let you know the Hahndorf Kingship is alive and well,we shot the 150th last Dec, Neville Jones won it for the 15th time ,makes him the 10 percent man I guess..the open div is mostly shot with 30cal single shot T/R rifles,BP div saw an assortment of cals,Hi Walls,Rolling blocks,Ballards,Martinis,I did not shoot this year, I use a 1874 Swede R/B Douglas barrel 
In40/65,We shoot for the honour of adding a silver medal to the apron,It now has more than 140 attached and is valued at more than $250k AU.Hope this is of some interest.
