Which primer for 45-70 black powder loads?

Have always used WLRM primers for my black powder loads in 45-70, but have heard that better accuracy can be obtained with large pistol primers instead.  Any thoughts?

I have not used pistol primers in the 45-70 but there are a lot of people out there that seem to like the cci br2 primers. The one drawback to pistol primers is that they are about .005 or so shorter than rifle primers. This can lead to them being forced deeper into the primer pocket and then setting back and can cause an indentation in your breach face. I am not sure but I think that the CPA is the only rifle with a fully hardened breach block, I think that the rest are case hardened.
Really the best way to find out what works best is get a variety of primers and just give them a try. Keep everything the same and only change primers and see what happens.

Like most everything else in shooting BP, anything anyone tells you is for "Their Rifle" and not necessarily your rifle. Like over-primer wads and most other changes, you will have to see what works best in your rifle by doing some testing. Might be great in your 45-70. Might not.

Did a primer test with LP & LR with my 38-56 a few years ago and found no difference. Have not done so with my 40-65, but use CCI 200 LR as that is what was available during the latest 'contrived' shortage/hoarding. It holds the 10-ring out to 600yd when I do my part. Low SDs, etc., are great. But, how does it do on the target you are shooting? That's where it matters.

Lead, the key shooting black powder charges is to determine a primer with low brisance (shock wave)
Brisance ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
Black powder charges do not explode as does smokeless charges.  Since BP has no TNT compounds, it deflagurates meaning that the flame envelops the powder and for equal pressure, one wants the whole charge to deflagurate at the same time

So, primers for BPCR reloads are those that have a low brisance - usually a shorter flame that generates a smaller shock wave.

My BPCR reload primers of choice are Federal GM210M (LR Match) and CCI BR2 LR Benchrest

And in my tests with my 40-65, Federal Large Pistol Match primers gave slightly better groups than Federal Large Rifle Match primers. As usual YMMV.

I've had my best results with CCI BR2 primers with my 45-70. I bushed a handful of cases to pistol size and did not see any improvement in my rifle.

Also I might add that I got the worst ES using WLRM. Having said that I do use them in my hunting loads as they give slightly higher avg velocities. Of course in a hunting load the primary detriment to accuracy is the bullet itself.

I think you can develop good loads with many different primers.  I like match grade primers because they make me feel good.  My .40-65 really likes Remington Large Pistol, but I have some really low ten shot SD's ( 4 to 4.5 on velocities of nearly 1200 fps ), using Federal Large Magnum Match primers with plain old Goex Fg and an over primer wad in one of my .45-70's.

If I had to choose just one primer though it'd probably be CCI BR2 or Federal LR Match.

Lead,

I have found that primers will not work the same across the board with different brands of powder and even same brand, just different granulation.  I use a different primer in my 40-70 & 40-50 swiss 1.5Fg loads than I do in my 45-70 & 40-82 swiss 1Fg loads.  Goex also needed a different primer [don't shoot Goex any more].

The best advise I can give you is to try a pistol primer , punched thru a piece of copy paper.  Develop a good load, and only then start making changes in primers,
lube if you shoot gg bullets or bullet seating depth.

Keep on hav'n fun!

LP Primers work very well in my 45-70.
Have tried different Primers LR and LP / LPM  with and without Overflasholewads.

I have a limited range up to  100m and  use Wano Powder and a 520grs  457125 Gov. Bullet.
Found no great differents in Accuracy and fouling issues
At this time i stay with LP Primers from Murom / PMC
