Forming 32-40 brass

Happy New Year. Tips on forming 32-40 brass from 30-30 ?  I have  formed  some Horiday  30-30 into 32-40. Had trouble expanding neck. Am I the only one?  Had to make two separate expanders to get to size. Made with long taper, even at that  it was tough. I annealed the necks to make it work. They came out short, will that be a problem?😁

Tapered neck expanders don't work as well as those with steps.   E.g., I was able to use two expanders with 3 small steps each to expand 30-40 cases to 40 cal, or one such to expand 30-30 to 38 cal.  In each case, no annealing was required, and the resulting necks were very regular and uniform.

I've had much better luck knocking the shoulder down on .32 Win. Spl. cases to make .32-40 from. They readily size down a lot easier than stretching the necks up to .32 on a .30-30 case.

The best method that I have found is to full-length size the 30-30 case in a 32-40 die then taper expand the neck until it will fill the chamber at the mouth. Then fill with black or drop a light load and fill with cream of wheat. Take them to the range and fire them take them home and trim them square.

Is the 30-30 a candidate for fire-forming with a light load and some CoW?

You will need a quick powder like Bullseye to form.  You need to fill the case with something to hold pressure, CoW or lots of tissue paper.

Another question, or questions. I have been shooting 6br,6ppc,6xc for a long time. How does the fixed ammo prep differ with the 32-40 loading? I think it make sense to use the same methods as with the above cartriges. I realize the neck tention will be different because of the soft lead. How am I rong? Thanks for all the help. This lead bullet single shot stuff is all new to me.

Same loading procedures apply. Use hard gas check bullets like the CBA shooters.

Edit.... You'll want full length cases for fixed ammo. Reformed 30-30 brass will be short.

Ha, my cases are about .070 short. Not enough grip on bullet? I suppose would be ok for breach seat?
