I live in florida and have shot out to 200 yards with my sharps,Have loads that do well at that distance,Im going to michigan this summer and will be shooting a long range match there ,I wont beable to shoot much at long range until i go maybe twice if im lucky,Any help on sight adjustments would be helpful.I think ill be going to 1000 yds,I dont plan on hitting alot,But would like a shot at hitting a few lol.Im shooting a 4590 1874 shiloh,im using the moony bullet and creedmore right now,Should i try to get any certain velocity for the long haul??I have axcess to a chrony for a few weeks.

With a 45-90, you should not have to worry about the MV needed to get to 1K. If it shoots accurately at 200 yards, then you are probably half way there. I shoot a 45-70 with a PP 523 grain bullet on top of 82 grains of Fg Swiss, which has an MV of about 1280 fps. That load has low Sd and extreme spread over a chronograph. If your current load has a single digit Sd then you are ready.
The main thing about LR shooting is to listen to your spotter and get your shot off within 15 seconds, or things can change down range.
Keep on hav'n fun!

Jeff, I am not sure how many long range shooters there are on here, but on the shiloh board,

there are some long range shooters that could give you some good info on sight settings. The may not be exact but they will come pretty close. If need be I can dig out my sight settings for silhouette that would give you a place to start out to 600m or so.

Jeff,
Shooting 84 grs. of Swiss 1 1/2 and a 545 gr Postel gives me a velocity of 1296 in a 34" barrel. You can come up 100 points from your 200 yd setting and be close at 800 yds. 2-3 pts less if you're shooting a rifle with a shorter barrel. You will need about 19-20 pts to get to 900 yds and an additional 21-22 pts more to reach 1000 yds. If you have access to a chrony, work on getting your SD's down in single digits. If you can't, elevation problems will become very apparent. You're gonna have fun and shooting LR paper matches are quite contagious. Bob
I used pts instead of minutes for elevation as that can vary from one rifle to the next because of different barrel lengths

Jeff, do you have access to a chronograph? I've used the JBM Ballistics software ( free online ) with a .500 BC for a BACO Money bullet at 1350fps to estimate sight settings for my .45-110 out to 800m. It was reasonably close up until 600 yards and after that the software predicted more drop than I was seeing.
Interestingly there is a simple technique that was a little closer for me. Check out Montana Charlie's post on bpcr.net. It's actually a repost from Dan Theodore.

Let me know if you cannot access the web site and I'll pm you the details. My come ups from 500m to 600m are 16 minutes, then 17 minutes from 600m to 700m, and then 18 minutes from 700m to 800m, so Dan's technique seems pretty close.

Jeff
Take Old Win's advice and get your velocities into that 1280-1290 range. Use his 'come ups' as he says and you will do fine.
Remember you will need a 'good' long range sight to get to 1000 yards. If you don't have one, your just whistlin!

Yep............ you've got one of the best with that MVA sight. Assume you have the matching globe front sight or something similar. Good luck in MI. Plan to get up for the MI 3-day BPCR regional in June, if all goes well.

Jeff, the only other thing I'd suggest is making sure that your front sight has been drifted such that in a dead wind you actually have zero windage on the rear sight. It will help keep you on target when the winds change frequently.

If you are only shooting 200 yards before you go, make sure the rear sight is angled a fuzz to the right to compensate for the right hand twist of the rifling. I used a torpedo level and put the bubble against the line just off plumb. My windage always tracked dead on from 200 to 1,000 yds. That worked on several different rifles.
I have seen new guys show up with a rear sight the was straight or in one case leaned a fuzz to the left. You can run out of windage really fast a lot shorter than 1000 yds

I have a handy calculator on my Iphone that works pretty well in my experience so far. It's called IShooter
Here is a chart generated by the calculator with the wind and wind angle set to 0 based on a 510gr money nose from Boomers. Obviously not YOUR perfect chart but its a decent representation. As I said wind and angle are set to 0 so your seeing spin drift.

Interesting chart. First time I have seen the actual calculations.
What is the range of the BC of the long range bullets being used today?
Back in the 90s I used .5 for everyone. I calculated 1000 yd sight setting for lots of guys who had never shot beyond 5 or 600 yds. When we went to KD22 at Fort Lewis, they were all right on except for one guy. I wondered if he was giving me bogus input for the calcs. The results didn't look reasonable and he was nowhere near the target with the settings calculated.

I find 0.5 is reasonably close for a 535gr grease groove Money bullet at silhouette distances, but the paper patched 540gr Money bullet when shot out of my .45-110 seems like it does a bit better than 0.5 at greater distances.
I suppose that it might be that software isn't that good at predicting the flight of subsonic projectiles though.

Chris.
Might be those slick sides on the PP helping a little ?
I corresponded with Dr. Richard Gunn about 15 years ago. He was a premier long range bullet expert at that time. He said the Creedmoore bullet design of the late 19th century were optimum for LR BPCR.
I used pre-Windows Olher Ballistic Explorer. I'm sure the newer programs are much more sophisticated and the power of the processors has increase exponentially.
I couldn't find any BC info for lead bullets. When I started I shot over the chrony at the muzzle and again at 50 yds to calculate the starting BCs. Subtle changes in the nose design didn't seem to matter much.
