i have a question about some lead i have acquired. when cast into ingots it turned colors and it looks just like a good job of case coloring. does anyone know or can guess(?) what this is.???   i have heard that lead can contain cadmium but beyond that no clue as to what is going on. i figured this is the best  place for an answer   thanks Smiley

Dave,
If the color is blue and it's soft. It means that it's pure or very close to it, lead.

If it's blue and hard, I have no clue.

colors come from a few trace elements surfacing - not uncommon.

Dave,

That's what I shoot. Give it a try. You may be surprised. I always am.

Often just a surface effect where the regular pattern of ridges caused by cooling acts as a diffraction grating.

If you want really hard bullets, throw a bit of crap diecast metal into the melt and skim off the resulting scum/slag. The result is dead hard: I saw a 12 guage ball of it shot into a hawthorn stump (very hard). It penetrated about two inches, and was undistorted when cut out of the wood.

I wouldn't recommend using it in a rifled barrel.
