How do you do your shooting ?

Asked in another thread about Schuetzen matches in PA . About 100 reads and only one reply to a club in Maryland . Do most shooters of this disapline just have to travelto matches ? Or do you just shoot at your local club by yourself ?Here in Western PA it's all about trap and archery . It seems there are shoots all over the country but you have to travel . I will not be retired for at least another 7 years . When I bring out my single shots at my 1000 member club most have never seen a single shot rifle . Lots of black plastic rifles and bolt action hunting rifles .

traveling is pretty much what it is;    unless you can find/make a few more friends with similar interests at your large local club and then start your own affiliated ASSRA club.  A lot of the affiliated clubs have started that way.

I suspect that MANY if not MOST of the member on the forum here are in similar situations.  and that most of the affiliated clubs started out with a guy like you who managed to get together with a few others, meeting them at the range, local gunshops or guns shows, discussions with collectors in your area etc etc. to discuss and develop common interest.

I'd be VERY surprised if a thousand member club did not have a few members who have an interest in the Single Shot rifles.

Perhaps a few of our members can contribute a few ideas and tips about how their club got started.

It might also make a good topic for a letter to the editor of the ASSRA Journal ( I'm assuming you are a member)  there are a fair number of members who get and read the Journal regularly who do not participate in the on-line part of the community

Jefferson State Schuetzen Society was started by a friend and I, that I got enterested SS because of their accuracy. He was a High Power shooter at dabbled in muzzle loading and that was how I met him (ML).

We affiliated, right a way, with ASSRA in 1986, with just the 2 of us. Once it got in the News Letter (now Journal), I had another guy call me and he joined and then another in the next couple of months.

After that, I mined gun shows and would talk to anyone that would stand still long enough to bend their ear. Over a period of about 5 years, there was about 8 - 10 of us but, my friend died. It was a lot of work, I ran the matches and sent the announcements and results and, and, and, and, and!

I enjoyed it and over the years, help a lot of guys to get their rifles shooting to help keep them from becoming discouraged. Like I said, it was a lot of work but, rewarding. Also, at that time, there was the Coors matches and a lot of people new about SS because of it. I'm not sure how much that helped, as I saw it the biggest problem was finding competitive people that would invest in it.

I looked over on the CBA site and found 5 shooters listed in the basically SS class, in these towns in PA:

Christiana, PA
Lincoln University, PA
Kennett Square, PA
Scranton, PA
Whitehall, PA

I can PM their names to you but, I don't have contact info. If you can get a hold of just one, he could probably get the others for you.

These are the towns and clubs that the ranges are in and if you get a hold of the range, I'm sure they can get you to the right people:

Atglen Sportsman's Club - Atglen, PA

Tamaqua Rifle and Pistol - Tamaqua, PA

Hope that helps,

Frank

I travel a lot. Fuel prices are down but it's winter. Dread.

The Western NY Schuetzen Society has matches in Alabama and Bath (NY). Not much further for you to go to Etna Green.

Live in Central Pa.  Have shot in Maryland, nice shoot, had a good time.  Unfortunatly most of the matches I shoot are one man matches.  Wish there was more interest in Schuetzen in Pa

Yeah 38-55 I see your point about PA . You would think that with our strong German heritage here in PA Schuetzen would be thriving a little more ?

Have you looked at the "Members Map"?  It shows a lot of members in W. Pa and Eastern Ohio.  Some can be contacted by PM.
Driving to a match can be enjoyable in itself if you have interesting Companions to share driving and gas.

Atglen, which Frank listed above, shoots two matches that draw single-shot shootesr, but neither are Schuetzen. One is a cast-bullet match where most anything goes as long as they are cast bullets and the other is a "buffalo gun" shoot where pretty much anything goes shooting at full-sized silhouettes at the correct distances with cast bullets and single-shot rifles from the bench. Has a bunch of other 'made up' rules.

Here on the left coast, well behind the Redwood Curtain, we have a small group (minimum of 3, maximum of 12, so far), with 4 traditional Schuetzen matches a year (.25 cal centerfire or larger, iron sights, 30 shots at 200 yards) on Sunday mornings, plus some sort of shoot every Tuesday.  We meet at the gate to the Manila range Tuesdays at 11:30 AM.  Mostly it is rimfire; outdoor gallery from Christmas thru mid-May, 100 yard & 200 yard either bench or offhand or some combination after that.  We shoot the ASSRA rimfire match in October, the Bruce Garbe match in June, a Monica Lewinsky's birthday match (almost guaranteed to annoy your wife), and whatever seems to strike our fancy.  We sometimes shoot at the 50-foot gallery targets, gallery format, at 100 yards from the bench.

We call ourselves the Tuesday Afternoon Schuetzen Verein, and our definition of acceptable rifles is pretty broad.  In October, we had a Schuetzen match (30 shots offhand at 200 yards) for M-1s, Springfields (etc) and ARs. Scores were not up to our Schuetzen standards.  Today was the start of Gallery season.  One younger shooter used a Mossberg 44US and beat us all.  1159-16c, with Blazers.

Good jobs are hard to come by around here and tend to be seasonal.  Many of our younger shooters participate when they are out of work.  If they find work, they disappear until the next layoff.

We are a long way from any other SS shooters.  It's 4+ hours each way and at least one night in a motel or camping if we go to the Jefferson State Schuetzen Society.  Everywhere else is a major effort.  A couple of our members go to the Quigley, but mostly we stay home.

If Christmas or New Year's Day came on Tuesday, we probably would not shoot.  Last year, Joe & Biggi joined us for a Christmas Eve shoot.

Traveling is half the fun. Seeing friends that you only see a couple of times a year, Making new friends. Seeing how they do it somewhere else. That’s how you learn.

That sounds like a good time Wink  When is Monica's birthday?

I used to do what my wife dubbed the Stupid Sunday Match at Tacoma.  It was 200 yard BPCR on Super Bowl Sunday for those who did not want to waste the day watching an over rated, lop sided football blow out Grin

Most of my shooting these days is of vermin and the occasional target, using a (·22") Air Arms S 310 - which doesn't qualify as a single-shot gun.

ATM I don't use the things which go Bang! because I haven't reapplied for my driving licence - had to give it up when my heart kept stopping... Now I have a Pacemaker and a stable medicinal régime my consultant says I'm fit to drive again, and I hope that I can resume going to Vintage Arms Association range meetings, where (when some of them are fettled) I could choose between the M77 Werndl; the 28-30-120 of unknown make; the double-barrelled percussion 32-bore deer gun; the 28-bore flintlock s/b deer gun; the flintlock sea-service musket and/or the (percussion) Dum-Dum Armoury Tower musket.

Oh, and one I'm restoring, slowly, a 4-bore flintlock elephant gun. I have a sort-of feeling that the 4-bore isn't really suitable for sustained fire (with a bullet which weighs a quarter of a pound) Still, you stand a better chance of cutting the line on a target if your aim wanders a bit.

Fredrick Sellous said of the 4-bore, he wished he had never used one, it spoiled his offhand shooting for life. Cry
