New .40 cal mould

I have a new .40cal 300gr tapered mould on order from Accurate. I was looking for a bullet that would be lighter in the recoil department. Hoping it shoots as well as the 400gr Ron Long I'm using.

Keep us posted on your testing. I went the other way with a 420GR BAC0 $ bullet. (Just installed a "Breako-Graco" recoil reducer for comfort.) I'll let you know when I get something meaningful to report.

Hi Ray,

Will do. What .40cal barrel are you using? I have a 385gr tapered mould from Accurate you could try. Let me know and I'll send it your way. It shoots well in my rifle.

Have the M4 BACo 420gr bullet and it will only cast 412gr for me (and others) in 20-1. Very accurate out to 600yd, but would prefer to have the additional 8gr, as advertised.

For a light bullet have found the Saeco 640 bullet at 370gr to quite accurate when pushed by 54gr of 2F Swiss or Goex. Have shot a few 99s at 200yd with it (can't seem to get that last point), but that is no fault of the bullet. I did ring a ram with it at 200yd last weekend, but the shot was so low on the belly that I'm not sure the entire bullet made impact.

Bob & SSS, My barrel is a 28" Badger 16 TW by CPA. I'll stay in contact with you about some mould swapping or bullet trading so we can share results. My 420 BACo $, with 20:1, casts at between 418 - 421. Predominantly, between 419 - 420. I separate those bullets into groups of .3 GR +- weight and shoot them together. Those under 418 - 419 are for practice & fouling shots.  Those of over 420 will be grouped +- .3 when I accumulate enough for a box (50) and will be considered as match worthy. My typical casting temp. is 775 - 800 degrees.
I've not used BP. Presently working with 4759. The jury is out. Any suggestions appreciated.  Thanks.  Ray

One of the folks I shoot with uses a 30" long 16" twist Badger (mine is a 32" long 14.5" twist GM) and the heaviest bullet he shoots is a 420gr Brooks, IIRC.  It is very accurate (at least as accurate as mine), but we both shoot BP so can't add any info for smokeless. I usually cast at 765F, so will try bumping that up 10-15F to see if I can get a bit more weight out of that BACo $ bullet. You are segregating your weights more tightly then I am (1gr). For group at 200yd that might be needed, but for BPCR & BPTR where minute-of-animal or 10-ring is needed, perhaps not.

Ray,

I have a couple moulds that worked good in my Badger barreled highwall.

RCBS 400gr BPS
RCBS 350gr CSA

In my Bartlein barreled CPA I'm shooting mid 240's with two bullets.

400gr Ron Long tapered
385gr Accurate tapered

4759, 4227 and MP300 all work well for me.

Hey guys ................  If we ever get together, there is no doubt we will give each other a tough match.  Lovin' every second of it!  Merry Christmas to all.  Ray
PS - Has anyone been keeping track of velocities achieved?

Ray,

I don't have a chronograph so no data on velocity. I do want to get one sometime in the future.

Hi Art,

I'm shooting a CPA mod 52 in .40-50 Sharps Straight. The barrel is a #4 30" long.

Glenn what .40 caliber cartridge are you shooting with the 14.5 twist? I am thinking about building a 40/60 Maynard and was wondering about that barrel.

40-65 and 40-60. The barrels are GM, which they call their 40-82 barrel for some reason. Has a 14.5" twist. You might want to wait a bit. They are going to start lapping their BPCR barrels and won't sell them until all the 'standard' barrels are gone. Last I talked to them, about 2-3 months ago, they thought some time around the end of the year. Think they've added an 'X' to the name or catalog number to indicate that it is a lapped barrel. Not sure how much better it would be as my 40-65 is very accurate out to 600yd.
