Question on Remington Hepburn

Hi Guys,

Been a few years since I’ve posted, but I’ve been a loyal lurker, today I need some general advice or better yet some informed opinions.

About ten years or so ago I started buying rifles that were of interest to me, not a collection more of an accumulation. My favorite guns were always single shots and especially old varminters, low walls, high walls, Stevens 44’s, 441/2’s etc. I had a lot of fun with them and have enjoyed owning them. Now the time comes to think about where they will end up as I can’t take them with me and my kids are not interested in my guns.

I’ve decided that I will take my time and sell them off one or two at a time to see if I can derive some enjoyment from placing them with people that will use and treasure them as I did. Having been away from the market for some time now, I’m not up on prices and values. Now, I know that most of you hold “varmintized” old single shots in some disdain but I also know that nice originals are few, far between and costly.

The first rifle I’m thinking of putting up for sale is a Remington Hepburn in .219 Zipper Imp. This gun has been re-barreled, re-finished and re stocked. The action is perfect works as new, bluing and metal work are excellent, it has a 22” semi heavy barrel with target blocks and a nice Fecker scope. The stock is a very highly figured burled wood, I don’t know what wood it is, but it is striking. The stock has walnut tip, grip cap, black separation lines, black diamond insert at the forend screw and a round black insert in the center of the grip cap. The butt stock has a large cheek piece and a well formed thumb rest and feels great for shooting off hand; it has a checked, inlaid metal buttplate.

Can I trouble you gentlemen for an opinion as to it possible value? Also, what is the market, in general, for this type of arm, is it a good time to sell or should I maybe wait for a better time?

Thanking all in advance,
Marcos (elalto)

Very tough to give a guesstimate of value on a firearm with just a description. Even tougher on a custom varmint rifle, as a lot of the value depends on how well it's done, and how well it shoots. That's part of the reason some have disdain for altered guns, because of the guns that were poorly altered.
It sounds like your Hepburn may well be in the other group of well made custom guns, but still would like a few good pictures before I hazard a guess.
I don't see collectable guns being off in price right now, and a good quality older varmint rifle is probably appreciated for what it is more now, than maybe 20-30 yrs. ago, when I saw people turning their nose up at them.

Sounds quite similar to the one I purchased a few months back with a 26" barrel. I posted a couple of pic's in the collector's or picture's forum (forgotten which). Found it:

Does yours have a single or DST? If as nice as you state it should bring $1500-2500 depending on who wants it. Just have to get it in front of the right person. I'm in the midst of having the barrel in mine (quite heavy, thankfully) bored & rifled in 38cal Rem-Hepburn.

First, the pictures have to be no larger than 500K. If you hold the curser on the picture, it should tell what size it is.

Second, on the left side of the reply box, there something that says Attachments, with a arrow, pointing down. If you click on that arrow, it will give you more attachments, up to 5 and you'll see more "Choose File" buttons appear under the box that you type the reply in.

Click the "Choose File" button and it will take you to the files in your computor. Go to where you keep your pictures and double click. If the file is 500K or less, it will attach to your post and show in the post.

I hope this helps.
