Charles -- I know antidotal advice is bad form, but I will tell you that had you have had a pair of Parson Russell Terriers (Jack Russell's) sleeping out in your backyard shed last night, you would still have that 50 lbs. of black powder this morning, plus the evidence to show the police and insurance company to back up your claim.

The evidence would consist of torn trouser legs that were bloodied by the intruder's resulting dog bites, and maybe even a blood trail off the property to follow.

Sorry for your loss. Seems nothing is sacred anymore. I'll go with the tourch thing as they may just take themselves out of the gene pool all by themselves. So if you hear an extremely loud bang you know what happened. Frank

Big dogs and electric fences are effective Grin  Don't really want to get too specific in public forum, but you need warning signs up for both.  The law requires you warn the lowlife community before you use any effective deterrent or damage one of the b@#$t@rd$.   Cry

I live in a very nice neighborhood but that's not where the creep's come from !!!  My first line of security is Shelby (G-Shep), Max (Pit-B) & Oprea (B-Lab) !!!  In the middle of the night, I let them bark all they want....

If they still get in, I'm waiting with my 12 Ga. (sawed-off) and if they still get by, they got my Wife and heaven help them then !!!

Ed...

However, it isn't beyond the wit of our forum members to arrange the warnings to deploy once the deterrents have been activated.

My neighbor has dogs that bark all night at whatever bothers them. I've grown to ignore them, as they bark at almost anything. A couple weeks ago they got their window broken out of their truck, and robbed. Seems they got used to the dogs barking at everything also, and ignored them too.
Dogs work great IF they aren't a constant PITA barking all the time.

I should title this "fun with prowlers." My father had a German Shorthair Pointer named Gretchen that never barked, unless she had someone treed, if we heard Gretchen bark we had to run out into the back yard to see what she had caught. She usually had some would be thief up a tree. One time she chased a prowler into my mother's closeline, it caught him right under his chin, and when we got there he was on he ground with the wind knocked out of him.  Grin

A dog that barks for the joy of barking is useless.  I never ignored mine.  I'm 99% sure my old bird dog prevented the Green River Killer using the ravine behind our house as a dump site.   He did have at least  2 sites within a couple of miles.  There may have been another one or two close by.  It has been a long time and I can't remember for sure.  They were all over south King County.

My 95# Newfie gets credit for 1 save on the house and 1 save on my son's Mustang.  I'm sure the deterrent effects of these two dogs had far greater value that I will ever know.

Hard wiring my van alarm to 3 500 watt quartz lights had a significant deterrent value also.  I always wondered what it was like for a lowlife trying the door at 4 AM either getting zapped by the electric fencer or finding himself in instant daylight?  Surprisingly, I never got a look at very many of these people. Their feet were faster than my response time.  There was never a brown trail to follow. I suppose they wore secure diapers.  Having the system hard wired means there is zero possibility of false activation.

One nice thing about a properly placed 500 watt quartz light is its safety shield feature.  When standing below it on a dark night observing lowlife activities, they are unable to detect that they are being observed.   This makes it a lot easier to gather evidence such as waiting for them to expose license numbers, getting a better description of the suspects, ect.  In my experience, they do leave rather hurriedly when they discover they are being observed.  Not sure if any items the observer may have in his hands give them an increased sense of urgency about the speed of the exit or not?

You can test the light shield value yourself.  Tonight, look at any bright light.  Make note anything you can see within a few feet of it  Cheesy
