You are correct, it is a harder grade of plastic.

HDPE verses LDPE Wads ... if this is going to be your of choice, the BPCR community uses low density (LD) verses high density.  In addition to protecting the bullet base, it is claimed to also scrape fouling from the bore.  I used them for a year or so but went back to my old standby wad material - felt

As for thickness - 1/16" is all one needs
