Mike, you get a good seal with just a cork wad?  I know that Kenny's wad stack includes cork but he uses 2 other wads in addition to the cork.

I've tried cork, even in my tight necked .45-70 and was unable to shoot without some gas cutting of the bullet.   What sort of cork are you using?  I've just played with the rolls of coarse cork you can buy at Home Depot.

This is all for fixed ammunition of course.  For breech seated, I've been using the same as everyone else.  A thin wad at the case mouth.

Chris.

Thanks for all of the input. I am getting ready to start developing loads for a 1:12 twist .38-50 Rem-Hep and will try the cork along with the veggie and poly. For now will be testing fixed ammo, grease groove bullets since I don't have a .38 PP mould.
Will also check with Kenny W. on his wad stack to see what he uses. Problem with that is he is pretty much out of it sometimes from the pain meds.  He was on the losing end of a wrestling match with his pickup. The pickup ended up rolling over him and he layed out in the sub-freezing weather for an hour or so til someone came by and called for help. He is out of rehab but still on pain meds and recouping at home now. I'll give him a call though.

You could also check with Steve Rhoades at Arizona Sharpshooters. He shoots a 38-50 in both 12" and 14" twist. Too bad Rick Moritz doesn't post here. He won the iron-sight BPCR nationals this year shooting a 38-50. Would be interesting to know his barrel & load info.

I imagine that it's going to be a Silhouette rifle?  I have a .38-50 RH and it shoots very well at 200m with 60gr of Goex Fg and a breech seated elliptical PP bullet.

For that one I'm using a 0.030" wad over the BP charge, and I seat a 0.060" LDPE wad with the bullet.

Kenny has posted his wad stack a number of times, bu it's really set up that way for paper patching his deep seated bore diameter bullets.  I remember that he's used a couple of different setups.   Hopefully he is making progress with his recovery.  I've never met him, other than "talking" with him on web forums, but he's been a lot of help to a lot of shooters, me included.  He and Rick Mulhern were the ones who inspired me to get into shooting the .45-110 with paper patched bullets.  He's also shared some excellent historical accounts of long range match shooting as it was done in the old days.  I hope I get the chance to shoot with him one of these days.

gunlaker,

In my 45-70, I actually use two cork wads that stack up to about 0.22" thick.  No gas cutting at all.  Since I shoot PP bullets, I do not use any other cards or wads in the load, except a paper wad to compress the powder.

I get the cork from the Fleet Farm store, and punch out the wads myself.

Keep on hav'n fun!
