Do many (any) folks use the .22 Hornet in Scheutzen competition?

That's one of the coins I want to flip - 22 or 25 Hornet.

At our club in Pembroke MA the only rule is "Rifle must conform to ASSRA Single Shot Rifle Rules" Ammo to be plain based cast bullets. Black or Smokeless allowed unless the category for the match is "Black Powder" In Black powder Duplex is allowed 10%. A shooter may chose to shoot Black powder in the other match categorys if he wishes. Also for most of our Schuetzen the Rifle must be a center fire caliber. 22 Hornet can fit all of the above. B.W. Darr does really good with his .22 WCF. I haven't spent enough time with mine yet to shoot it in a match.

I think you will have a better selection of good custom. 25 cal. moulds for schuetzen.

Given two 'good' moulds, one in .22 and one in .25, why would one be preferred over the other?

To be able to shoot in Quarterbore class. If you plan on shooting matches you will end up competing against the superior 32 Miller. A bigger hole in the paper is an advantage shooting for score.

heavier bullet for wind stability.  Atone time I wanted to get a 22 center-fire-bench rest subgroup (maybe a 1/5th bore group--LOL )started----still do,  just ran out of time and energy.
I wanted basically to encourage guys to dig out the old varmint rifles-----no bench-rest race guns.  There was lots of discussion about it since most of them were designed of jacketed bullets.  most of the guys interested were thinking of loading like they were reload able 22 rim fires.

I don't think have ever seen a 22 Hornet--or any other 22 centerfire on the line at EtnaGreen.  there may have been and I just don't remember it.  I remember taking to guys about casting 22 bullets so someone must be doing it.
I don't think there is anything in the rules to prohibit a 22 centerfire---as long as its plain-based lead bullets

The May-June 1992 ASSRA NEWS had an article by Jeff Aberegg on a Varmint Rifle Register.  Some of these rifles were turned out by well known gunsmiths of the past.  I remember him trying to drum up interest in some kind of match using these rifles with lead bullets.   I for one would love to see a postal match.  The little Hornet can turn in some impressive groups at 100yds.

I was thinking more about it last night.  I was remembering bits and pieces of discussions, comments, and opinions when we were talking about a special "lead bullet varmint rifle side match".

One thing was that the 22 hornet was great out to 100 or maybe 150 yards but that was about the limit just not much of a 200 yard rifle.  Thats why there were so many other 22 wildcats and "improvements" on the 22 centerfire.  That maybe it was a matter of bullet weight/design and the original/standard twist rate.

Another thing is the business about the smaller the case/bore, the more critical precision is in casting/reloading.   After all a tenth of a grain is a lot more critical with a 40 grain bullet 5 grain powder load than it would be with a 300 grain bullet and 15 or 20 grains of powder.

I guess my 2015 New Years resolution is going to be to make sure I spend more time on the local range for practice and development. and that I use this winter to get a few more project rifles done. Wink

I'm still on the fence, leaning a bit more to the .25 but the .22 is still under serious consideration.

I have access only to 100yd ranges.

Bigger than .25; not for a while - I'm moving from .458WM to currently the .405Win (and enjoying it) - this is a move to the other extreme.

Hmmm.  Which rifle?

Cat thing that would sway me is difficulty casting good 22 caliber bullets.  Hornet Case size is right bit larger bore even better.

I'm currently doing some load development with the .22WCF using a 70gr Darr Spitzer. My younger son will be using it this spring hopefully at the next CSV match. So far he's been able to shoot 1 to 3/4moa at 100yds from the bench.

The bullet mould I got from Barry casts excellent bullets that fall out of the mould. Casting temp is a little hotter than my other bullets.
