32-20 WCF Hepburn Loads.

I have a 32-20 WCF Hepburn. But I'm running out of 2400 powder which I like to use and gunshops around here don't have it. I have lots of 4227 and the Lyman handbook lists 7.8 grs. to a max of 9.7 grs with the 115 gr bullet. What I really want to know is can I go with the max loads with the Hepburn ? After all, they did chamber for smokeless at the end of production. Just how strong is the old Hepburn ? Thanks, Dale.

I really like 4227 and dont understand the new bad publicity and recent large reduction in load data for it. I have used old stronger data for 32-20 for use in Win 92,and weaker actions  Whitney -Kennedy , and Uberti 73. (sorry no Hepburn experience but would consider it stronger than W-K or Uberti ) , and for accuracy it does very well in all . Even the beefier old 60's listings seem mild in all my  guns. Certainly no bad signs
The only reason I can think of bad publicity is the controversial Barrel ringing discussions that often name 4227 as the culprit. I am wondering if the barrel ringing was done in soft barrels, sounds like it happens right at the gap between case neck and BS bullet using fillers?
Does anyone know of any true horror stories using 4227? I sometimes wonder  if  tragic tales dont involve a cover up of using a mistaken double load ?

IMR4227 has long been powder that gives smallest groups in 32-20s for me, using Lyman3118 bullets. 9,0+gr in my 100+ year old Stevens M47 (44 receiver) is proving once again to give slightly smaller groups than SR-4759 or AA5744.

I've been using 11.0 grains of 4227 for many years in the 32-20 with the 115 gascheck bullet.  I started using this load with a Number 2 rolling block.  The same load works great in M-1892 winchesters.  Never had a lick of problems and no case mortality that I can remember.  Been shooting the Remington for close to 30 years now.

I'm presently working with a 25-20SS LoWall.  Getting better groups with 4227 than I was with 2400.

I heartily agree with the above comments.   Been shooting 4227 in .32-20 for nearly 50 years and it is always the most accurate.  Maybe a little dirty but that's never a real problem.  Never more than 10 grains has been my rule in the .32-20.  FWIW.

Thanks everyone. Will make up some 4227 loads and see what happens. Dale.
