i use a $28 lee "precision" plastic hopper powder measure.  in fact, i use 3 of 'em, for both black and smokeless.  have had, and used, "top rated" measures costing over $300 each.  also, a powder measure needs to be mounted on its own separate table/whatever, away from the press or other vibrations.  ditto's for a scale.  i would never rely on *any* measure to throw a consistent charge within 1/10th grain at best, just doesn't happen at least for me.  the measure is just a ball park throw for the scale where i weigh to 3/100th grain.  as to concern over black and plastic and static electricity, it's grossly unfounded.

Hi Jack ---

I have at least six B & M's and have taken most of them apart to clean them, replace glass w/ plex-a-glas, etc. but it never occurred to me to do what you have done, that is, assemble one minus the finger lever and return spring.

I guess I need to do one of mine in that configuration and try it first hand.  Maybe you can save me the time to do so by telling me if the sliding block without the lever becomes difficult to slide when it hits or comes up against a kernel or two of 2Fg black or 4759 ?

Of course, with the lever in place, that person has the mechanical advantage that the finger operated block person gives up.

I have not had much of an issue with it binding on powder. It can at times. I usually double slide each load since it seems more consistent. The biggest issue is having the slider accidentally get bumped when not ready and dumping powder. I use a rubber band to hold it to the left just because I am too lazy to find a weaker spring. Keeping the parts clean so they slide easily is important. I have sprayed them with mold dropout to prevent binding.

Another thing that can help to increase consistency in your powder measure. Is to hard-wire ground it to a dedicated gnd. rod(NOT to the house gnd!).
This removes any static that can make the powder cling/stick.

I played with 55's for years before going to Belding and Mull for Black and Harrell's for smokeless. 55's work good enough if you get it set right, small adjustments are a pain.

About the only thing I use the 55 for now is Black Powder for shotguns and Minne ball rifles. It's calibrated in Drams and is good enough for either. Bit faster than the Belding Lyman = no separate drop tube .

Good Belding and Mull tip lube the slide with powdered graphite. Get a Small tube sold for lubing  locks keep it alongside the measure. Slick smooth and does not migrate into the powder.
