First one got cropped, it's got a nickled, Swiss buttplate. Hard to get all the barrel in.... It's got a lot of barrel.
It's my belief that this was done for the gallery type matches such as  the Zettler Bros. In NYC in the 1900's.

Alas, only the rifle came to me, zero history. Looks very lightly used.

Yes, a dandy rifle!
Not seeing any breech block pivot screw, so 44 1/2 action based sounds good.

Yep 44 1/2.  It's also interesting because no  provision for any fixed sights front or back.

If it's a Zettler, it might have that peculiar rifling mod they were known for.   They'd cut a groove down the middle of each land.   I'd love to see photos of that if it's got it.

No iron sight slots on the barrel means that the scope is very probably original.  If a gun was ordered with a scope, they omitted the iron-sight slots.   

Pretty nice piece, so say the least!

That's a beauty! Same configuration as my Walnut Hill, except mine was ordered without a cheekpiece. Mine also has the heavy 30" barrel in .22 short, but a different engraving pattern.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant zettler type gallery matches not to imply their work.
The bbl is pure Stevens. I bore scoped the whole thing before I got the lead and carbon out. Once I got it I found it to be quite accurate.
The scope, I believe, is the one  first fitted, I had been told.
