Nice old sporter! Great to see some of these preserved in their sporting reconfiguration. So many have been "restored" back to original specs, and lost this part of their history!

I have two of this type rifle (both HW) and mine and all the others that I've seen have also been well done. I believe that their era is from after WWII to maybe the early 70's. I personally like the style of them and both of mine are extremely accurate with jacketed bullets.
I've thought about putting a modern chambered cast bullet barrel on one of them but, haven't needed that YET

This one will shoot 52 gr benchrest bullets into 5/8"-3/4" for five shot groups with a full charge of 4064. Couldn't be happier.

Try 33.0 to 33.3 gr of Varget, I've only had mine out 3 times. Once with 4064, once with 4895 (got them loaded with the rifle) and Varget, all with 55 gr Hornady SX. At 33.0 I got a 1/2" 5 shot @ 100. I haven't had it out since to try the 33.3 load.

I suspect there's more to be had, however, with only a 10X up top it's not helping. Too lazy to swap out a high power alternative.
If I'm going out to bang a couple chucks, I'm packin the 20TAC anyway.

tim_s, What bullet are you using in your 20tac. I like the 39 grain Blitz King by Sierra. Have used it in my 204 Ruger rifles on chucks, and other varmints. The rifles are a Cooper and a custom Borden. Both are Super accurate and explosive on varmints. Have tried about all other brands of bullets and weights in the .204 and still like it the best. Have a friend that shoots it in his 20 Vartarg. His use also has been very successful indeed.

Hey, I've shot that bullet and it shoots OK. I have 2 Dakotas, a Predator and a model 10, and both do better with the 40Vmax over R10x. The Predator which came with a 25 1/2" Lilja will shoot in the mid .2's at 3915fps with 25.6gr of the R10x with Lapua brass. I've shot smaller on occaisionally with N133 but it's expensive and feeds my bench guns.
The Vmax has the best BC of all the 20's. That combo shoots flat well pas 400 yds and here in the East, rarley am I trying past 300.

Where in the east do you live. I'm about 8 miles north of the Mohawk Valley in NY. Started with the V-Max and they did OK. Ordered a few boxes more and they would not group to save my life! I tried to get RL10X to work but gave up and went with N135. Tried H322, BL-C2, Varget, and a few others. Best was with the N135. I have to make mention that the Berger 35 grain also shot very well, but didn't do the damage that the Blitz King does on light skinned critters. Longest shot with my 204 is on a chuck at a laser measured 506 yards. My friend with the 20 Vartarg hit one at 601 yards. It left blood and got down the hole. I watched the shot through a Leupold 40X spotting scope. It was a great shot with the tiny cartridge.
P.S. Want a pound and a half of RL10X? If you live close enough I'll give it to you!

Went to high school in Frankfort, grew up hunting chucks in the Mohawk Valley. I'm set with the R10x, however, do you have the newer stuff with the red star. I cannot believe you couldn't make it work, Todd Kindler, who developed the 20TAC , told me it was developed with that powder as the #1 choice.

Tim, I've got Todd's book and I gave RL10X a valid try with charge weight adjustment. It was a no go in the 204 Ruger. I'm in Gloversville. Just north of Fonda. You still hunt chucks? I do some.

Still get a few here and there. A buddy up on Tug Hill is a milk inspector up there, got 1200 last year. A few farms with 1000 yard hay fields.

That sounds like the place to go. Most of my hunting spots have dried up. Houses being built, and Amish moving into the area don't want other hunting.
Most chucks I ever killed in a year was 248 back in 1989. Had one day back then when I was south of Lowville NY where a farmer allowed to hunt in one of his back fields off Rt28. I believe that is in the Tug Hill area or close to it. The field was one that could not be seen from the road. Rolling small hills with rock piles in the corner, and a big tree with junk around it near the middle of the field. Longest shot was just over 300 yards. There I spent the afternoon with a pair of Remington 722 rifles. One in 222 Rem and the other in 6MM Rem. Sixteen fell to the 222 Rem before I switched to the 6MM Rem and shot another 7. I have never made it back into that area to hunt again.
