How does the Weaver T series 36 x 40 stack up against the equivalent Leupold Target scopes?
Thanks.

Old model American made Wever T scopes have much better mechanicals than Leupold. Optics not as good.

New Asian Weavers work fine.

I own or have owned 4 old Weavers 1 Asian Weaver and 3 Leupold targets.  All did the job. El Paso Weaver T 16 is my best target scope.

The old Japanese made Weavers are excellent and the new ones are good (I've read - no first hand knowledge), but the "in between" years were hit & miss. Never had a problem with a Leupold.

Well, he might be able to buy a scope but I'll bet ammunition is pretty scarce.

The T 36's are a very good optic, there is no 40x. They are not the quality of the Leopold comp series either in glass quality or adjustability. The LCS offerings in 35, 40, and primarily 45x are very popular and seen in major benchrest competition. The Weavers are probably the better value, a close match with the Sightron.
I am assuming you're asking about the classic Weaver T series, although they've recently been upgraded, including the new XR series which features  a 46X 30mm tube, with side focus. These are the state of the art Weavers today with great repeatability, good optics/clarity. I recently put one on a BR gun and its quite good.

The T series are good, I have 3 of them. At <$400, they are a bargain, but now that the new XR's are out, I wonder how long the T's will be offered.

The new XR series are better than the T's and are directly competing with the Leupold competition scopes. At $800 the XR's are cheaper than the Leupold LCS. I like my 46X XR better than my Leopold 40X. JMHO

The objection to new Weaver T scopes was no one would make reticle changes. Wonder if anyone is doing dot conversions now ?

I bought my T's with 1/8" dots, and the new XR's come with a 1/16" dot.
The 1/16" is getting kind'a small!

For me...  It is not all about the differences between the 2 "brands". It is about being able to repeat that is important to me. As most of my lack of reading the wind causes way more large groups than any ability to move a 1/4" or 1/8" at 100 yards.
I have 1 T-36x and several Leupolds, the T-36 was bought used and needed to be repaired which took Weaver about 2 months to return. A crushed Leupold was returned to the factory and completely repaired for free! Sometimes a lifetime warrenty really means something.

I had my old Weaver T's and New Leupold's converted to 3/4 moa dots. Most of my External adjustments are small dot too under 1 moa. Hunting 03 Springfield Sporter has a Weaver K 2.5 with a 4 moa dot. Looks as big as a Pizza, real fast on target though.

Asian Weaver T 15 I own has a duplex, I can live with it but not optimal.  It's on my 10 M airgun now used for basement practice offhand. Duplex and slipping elevation knob that cost me major points one match are the reasons I took it off my Smallbore Silhouette rifle.

I could not shoot a 1/8 or 1/16 moa dot offhand. You want all focus on the target, minimal on the scopes reticule. If the reticule is hard to see it's what your eye is going to be drawn to, at the expense of target focus. Bench rest may be different however my guess is with the 3/4 Moa ASSRA white center you want a dot to be slightly smaller, enough to show white around the dot. Lot smaller like 1/16 moa does not sound like a winning set up to me.

Everybody's eye is different though.
