Well it's true I have never looked through a Celestron. Will try one at our matches.

I have a Celestron Ultima 80 ED (the discontinued one) and can attest to is clarity and definition. It's a big heavy scope but it sure works well.

Where is the Celestron 'scope(s) made?

For some country of origin is important.

Don't know for sure, but will guess China, though there seems to be an expanding number of scopes made in the Philipines these days. If you are looking for a U.S. made scope, there isn't one other than the Questar, that I'm aware of. And I don't think you'll be happy with their price, regardless of how well made.

You can buy all the Top Quality US Made Scopes you want, however have to get them used off Ebay.

Meopta scopes - they even make their own glass, and you can get just about Svarovski/Leica performance for quite a bit less.  Pretty bomb-proof too...

Only problem is who will fix them if they break?

Yes......... Meopta are nice, but on the $$ side of things.

Shiloh Sharps has the latest non-ED/HD/fluorite glass Kowa scope listed with the 25X LER eye-piece and padded nylon case for $910 plus shipping. That's a pretty decent price for that particular scope.

With the non-ED/HD/fluorite glass Kowa side by side with the top flight ED/HD/fluorite Kowa, there is a noticeable difference in less than idea light conditions.   In the middle of a bright day, you will not be able to tell the difference.  Just depends on the level of detail desired in lower light.

My old Unertl 63x24 well mounted will resolve as good as any scope on the line with good light conditions. Were the new coated glass shines is when light conditions are poor. Low or adverse direction, coatings pay off when it's difficult.  Haze or high humidity day nothing works well.

In the end you pay your money and take your choice. If I was smart and not so contrary I would sell that Unertl and two of my 3 Leopold’s, keep the little 50mm 25 x Gold Ring for portability,  buy one big  Kowa for serious work and have change left over. Would have to accept Asian made though something I like to avoid.

Not just the coatings, but the quality of glass, as well. Time marches on (except for single-shot rifle design, of course Wink). The quality of the glass and coatings has never been so good.

If were going to spend some 'real money" on a scope would likely buy the 66mm Kowa with ED glass or the similarly priced Leupold Gold-ring with HD glass due to size & weight considerations. Excellent optics and small size trump large size and lesser glass for me. I've never felt the 65mm size of my Celestron Regal has been a drawback. No problems seeing .22cal bullet holes in paper at 200yd.

About a year ago I asked the same question about good spotting scope for under $1000 and decided based on the consensus here that the Celestron Regal 80 would be a good bet and it is , no regrets ,although it doesn't magically get my vision thru mirage or bad humid /gloomy conditions to see mid cal holes , even 45 cal can be hard to see,  even in the white @ 300 m. Although Im also glad I didnt spend more to possibly achieve the same condition based impediments. I must also get a better tripod to see if that helps
