What Press for 3.25" Cases?
Nov 21st, 2014 at 8:41pm
Print Post
I load 45-120 and 40-90 SS but a standard Rockchucker is difficult in that the loose bullet on the case needs to be put in at an angle up into the die then slid into the shell holder. I am looking for a reasonably priced option.

THank you,
Charles

A vickerman seating die with the window in the side of the die where you insert the bullet would make seating bullets as easy as any other case.

I load .450 nitro 3 1/4" with my rockchucker, and I just put the bullet up into the die, hold it with my fingers and insert the case into the shell holder.  Just a bit awkward, but not too bad.  Most of my blackpowder cartridges I don't size, so I can just slip the bullet in with my fingers anyway.

One added piece of information:
The longest seating die I have is for 40-82 which only can be turned into the press ONE thread before it crimps the case mouth. And, I am to cheap to buy 40-90 SS dies since I don't load it enough to justify.

Like ssdave, for my 450-400 3 1/4 I just slip the bullet up into the die and then slide it down into the case on my old Rockchucker.

I have a Lee Classic, large cast iron turret press. They are very heavy duty and have 4 1/4 inches above the shell holder to the bottom of the turret.

Press Type: Turret Press
Frame Material: Steel and Cast Iron
Frame Opening Size: 4-1/2"
Handle Location: Bottom Right or Left
Die Size Accepted: 7/8"-14 Threaded Dies
Die Bushing Accepted: No
Die Bushing Brand Used: N/A
Spent Primer Collection System:
Ram Stroke: 3-1/2"
Ram Diameter: 1-1/8"

I bought mine about 10 years ago for about $100, I think they are in the ~$150 range now.

+1 for the Lee Classic Cast turret press. Can get both 3-die and 4-die turret inserts. See them for ~$110 on the internet.  Another advantage to them is that the handle can be set for either right or left hand use.

My go to press is a corbin TypeII press. It has plenty of length and all the power you will ever need for case forming.
