Dried out bullet lube

Gents and Ladies, In this fine sport or madness we all proceed through a learning curve. Some of us are lucky to have a knowledgeable mentor to aid us in our education of lead bullets, single shot rifles, and the equipment needed to take part in the endeavor of SSRs. I had not till I found the ASSRA forum. A few years back when I first afflicted with the urge to shoot cast bullets in a single shot I cast many bullets and pan lubed then with a concoction of my own lube. Now after that time they have dried out, and I would like to remove the old lube and re-lube the bullets with a lube that I like much better. The new lube I bought from CPA is a winner in my book. Would like to hear some suggestion on the best and easiest way to remove the old dry lube form my bullets. I really don't want to wipe each one clean by hand, nor do I just want to melt the bullets down and recast. A lesson I've learned from this is not to lube my bullets too far in advance. I also seal the box shut they are stored in.

      Thanks in advance for your suggestions, Sendaro

I re-lubed a bunch of old .30 cal 200 gr Gas Checked bullets last winter. Heated them with a hand held heat gun. It's iffiy, get too hot you may damage the bullets not enough heat the lube won't run out. Fear of flash fires kept me from putting them in the oven.

If you put them in the oven at 200 degrees, it should melt the lube with no danger of fire.

More than one way to get there.

Boil them in water, and the lube will flat to the surface.  Cool, take off the lube from the water, and then decant the bullets.

Melt off with a heat gun or hair dryer, as previously mentioned.

Set them in the sun on a tray on a hot summer day.

Set them in the oven at your preferred temperature.

Myself, I just dip lube the old bullets in fresh lube, and use a case to cut the lube off just as if I had just freshly lubed them.  It refreshes the old lube enough to work with my lube/bullets.

Wow! Lots of good suggestions. Thanks. I like the one about putting them in boiling water and letting the lube come to the top and cool into a cake to be removed. I plan to give that a try. I believe it will do it.

You guys are the best! Thanks again.

That is what I do too.  However, depending on what you used, shooting bullets that have cured a year or more may be  more accurate than freshly lubed bullets.  I have shot them  5 years old without any issues and they are accurate than fresh  Undecided

Tried shooting some about a week ago without good results. No leading but no good grouping either. Would just as soon de-grease and re-lube with some JSL.

Probably not primarily beeswax & mineral oil, eh?

Time to melt it out if it will melt out  Grin

It was Bees wax, Crisco, and bear oil rendered for a nice fat Adirondack black bear. Seemed like the thing to do at the time. However it's got to go now!

It is probably the bear oil.  It is not easy to render as  a first time amateur Wink  Don't ask me how I know Cry

Plus the Crisco is vegetable oil.  I don't think it holds up to the mineral oil standard  Roll Eyes

I too have done a lot of those things that seemed like the  thing to do at the time Grin

This is exactly what I did and it worked out great.

Guys,
Again thanks for all the suggestions. I tried the boil the bullets in water method. It did OK on about 80% of them.  The ones that didn't clean up I will try again. I'm sure that the oven method would be a very good way to do also but I'd need a more torrent wife. Bake bullets in her new oven! That would be a sacrilege! That's OK cause that's where the oatmeal cookies come from, yummy! I learned a long time ago DON'T PISS OFF THE COOK!

yep,  usually purchasing stuff can be negotiated, worked-around, or obfuscated;  but messing up the kitchen with reloading, casting, or other "kitchen-table-gunsmithing" can be life threatening, at least if eating is part of your quality-of-life, and it can spill over into other critical areas of happy coexistence as well. That was well put!

Tried floor wax stripper yesterday to remove the dried lube. After the bullets were setting in it for a few hours I flushed them with cold water for a few minutes and allowed them to dry. This worked very well and there was about 95% of the old lube removed. They will be pan lubed today.

       thanks for all the suggestions, Sendaro

A lube that survived an extreme example:
* My reloading room was under 36" of salt water being flooded by Super Storm Sandy ...
* Many trays and containers of pan lubed bullets in the salt water
* Nearly all of the lubed bullets did not have any of the lube removed
* Also I cast 60 lbs of 454190's for 45 Colt at one casting session.  I can't shoot all of the pan lubed in one year.  The lube does not dry out
The recipe is:
*40% Mutton Tallow
* 40% Paraffin
* 20% Beeswax
This recipe is used for both smokeless & black powder reloads with no leading or lube starvation, including at 3650 fps in a 220 Swift
