I am pretty sure there is one out there somewhere.
I have one to add
Winchester Low Wall 22lr mfg 1918 (probably a Winder Musket originally)
Pope's Markings
690-Pope's Barrel #
B9-Barrel fixture or tool number
15.9-Rate of twist (non-gain 8 lands LH twist)
2/9/27-Date of barrel
H M Pope

Barrel is ~30" long Taper is ~1.65" at the chamber ~.935 at the muzzle

They are not the sort of books Amazon handles.

The Pope books that are out are for the Hartford Pope's. Tom has said he would do a Jersey City book also. He does have a lot of data on Jersey City as he has grabbed any thing that came to him for future publication. He would be the best chance of any real information. HTH Regards, FITZ. Smiley

Barrel was originally on a Hi-Wall in the Pope records. Jersey City Pope Hi-Wall no. 690 22lr was sent to Edgar Hamm on 4-2-27 along with 688 to George Hamm 691 to Albert Hopps 689 to Albert Handwreck 692 to Earl Handwreck. All Hi- Walls and .22 lr.
They belonged to a rifle club and it seems ordered barrels. Another  group of Hi- Wall .22 rifles also went out on 6-30 27.
Interesting I have Stevens- Pope Hi-Wall serial number 690!!
More information will be in the Jersey City book which will come out a few years after the Steven-Pope book due out in a few more years.
This from the original Pope records. Hope this helps a bit.

Did he modify the HiWalls to make them easier to load 22 LR?

Many have the left side of the upper reciever removed to ease loading. Possibly what we have here, a picture would be great.

That is VERY interesting!!! I had heard Pope had duplicated some numbers I wonder if he lost track there for a minute. Mine is definitely marked 690. It is a Low Wall but I don't know about putting a High Wall barrel on a Low Wall action. Are the threads the same??

Tom how is the bottom of your 690 marked??

Looks like time for Pope 101. Pope started in Hartford Conn. and made barrels up to about 400 then went to work for Stevens and to avoid confusion Stevens Pope numbers went on from 400 to just over 1900. Pope left Stevens and after a couple of stops landed in Jersey City. There he started nombering barrels at 100. So as you see duplicate numbers run in the hundreds.
The Pope records are very clear the rifles were ALL hi-walls in the club order. How it got the lo-wall action is anyones guess.
Just click on my name and check previous posts pictures of the 32-40 Bremmer stocked hi-wall schuetzen rifle are shown in the post about my finding the long lost false muzzle on e-bay and getting back to the rifle.

There are two ways that the barrel could get on a LW.

1. HW's with #1 or 2 barrels had the same shank size (thread) as the LW.

2. I believe that the late LW's where made from cut down HW forgings and had the larger shank size.

Most, if not all 1885's (HW & LW) receivers will time up to barrels. I've done several and they all have timed up.

Tom
That's pretty much what I have read about number duplication. It took me twice to catch your gun was a Stevens-Pope number.
I wonder if this barrel was put on the LW due to easier loading vs. the HW. The action and barrel have been together for a LONG time.
Please disregard the cell phone pic and the bathroom that's under renovation.

Another thing on this subject.
There is a front sight dovetail.
Two sets (8) of scope block holes.
Two forearm screw holes
It also has two dimples on the bottom of the barrel about 1 1/2" apart about  1/2" back from the muzzle. What are they for?

Tom,
Is there a reliable point as to the last Stevens-Pope barrel # when he cut ties with them?  Bob
