Seating depth for Hi Wall 32-40?

     Hi:

How deeply should I seat the bullets for my Win Hi Wall?  Should I seat them to the crimping groove and crimp them or should I seat them just to touch the rifling and not crimp them?  Which will produce the better accuracy?

The bullets are 160 grain flat nose plain base.

I am using 13 grains of 4759 powder

i would seat them to touch the rifling,  with a crimp you may distort a soft bullet.  art

I would experiment.  Starting at touching the rifling all the way back to .100 or maybe even .150"  back.   After thousands of rounds and tons of lead, I learned to leave no stone unturned  Grin

No mention of bullet diameter or throat diameter.  In my experience a bullet of less than throat diameter does badly when seated back from the rifling.  YMMV.

I thought he was referring to fixed ammo since there is a crimp question involved.

I had or have a rifle that liked a good running jump at the rifling. Might be the Danish roller. Has deep five groove rifling.

Pretty sure you're not going to get a correct for your rifle/bullet answer here.

You will know.

Zeke give you a few tips for fixed ammo in single shots things that have worked for me.

Forget the crimping grove, most 160 gr 32 bullets wee intended for lever actions were crimps are required to keep the bullet in place on recoil.

Consistent bullet pull is important most single shots can get enough pull case neck alone, loose is not good but too tight not good either. Objective is to deliver the bullet to the bore unchanged by the case. Seat some then pull them see how much seating has changed the bullet. Should be no measurable difference.

I like to seat just off the lands as a starting point, you can figure this out by measurement, hand seated bullet by itself measured with a rod from the muzzle, bullet first the breech block next.  Confirm by painting a seated cartridge with the bullet nose painted with a black marker.

With a bit off as a starting point go more engagement next see if it improves. For me too far is when the bullet sticks in the bore and won't extract. Get to that point might as well breech seat.

Most important set your expectations to be a acheavable. Field gun iron sights simple rest don't count on 250's or under 1 moa. Fixed light 32 bullet not tailored to that rifle under 2 moa is a good starting goal. Get 2 Moa reliable long run every time then start looking for small improvements.

Biggest gain probably from a custom mold longer bullet

Also think about seating into the lands. With the camming action of the High Wall you can get about 1/16" or a little more. For fixed ammo you may want a seating tool to cam the cartridge into place. As mentioned, you'll need to experiment and find what your rifle prefers.
