I joined last month after lurking as a non-member for a couple of years.  I have been shooting CBA modified military for a few years, and have a CPA on order with Gail for CBA plain base matches at Clark Rifles, Canby and Paul Bunyan out here in the NW.  So far I've been looking and learning.  When I have something to say I'll be posting, but my only SS rifles now are an 1871 Mauser, a Swedish and Danish RB.  I'm still trying to figure out how to explain that CPA to my wife when it arrives......

I asked a question about this a few weeks ago.  I average at least one or two spams each day that make some reference to ASSRA or something related to gull me into opening their trash.  The latest thing I got had used Harry Eales' name as part of the address with the hope that I would recognize him and open their link without thinking.  There is definitely some strange trolling going on here, and if the administrators were to ask potential new members a simple question or two that would indicate whether they were really interested in single shots, it should take care of things.  OTOH, a friend of mine who is a serious collector of single shots was refused membership in the forum for several years because his last name sounded funny.  Remember the filter that changed the name of the famous sniper to "Carlos Haththingy?"  I do hope we can find a happy medium.

Hello Froggie,

I hadn't a clue someone was taking my name in vain. What a bloody cheek some people have. I wonder if it was because I was the previous member who brought this subject up? I'm just one of several over the years apparently. Undecided

Harry

Hello Harry,

No problem with you and yours... the way the e-mail to me was worded and the fact that they sent the same one to a long list of recipients cued the anti-SPAM feature on my e-mail program.  They tried to make it look like someone I knew (you) was trying to send me a personal e-mail, but it was both generic and personal in wording, raising red flags.  I've read enough of your very good posting on here to spot an imposter right away.  I look forward to seeing your real posts on this forum.

As you say, it was pretty "cheeky" of them though!

Regards,
Froggie

I occasionally get those and have for years.  I think some one harvests a name out of my email contacts some how.

I've been a member for a while, but don't post frequently. I do read the forum daily. I think that is an extremely well run forum, but I also think that we may sometimes scare away people who are interested, but haven't yet accumulated much knowledge about SS rifles.  It would be nice to see some fresh blood come in and actively participate. That's how traditions like ours continue long after we are gone. Just my 2 cents.

As an Anti Spam Blocker on the SMF board I administer, when they register they have to answer 4 simple questions related to duck & goose hunting.  One wrong answer - they cannot register
Plus every new registrant must provide a valid email address!

As a newbie to this site I would have been hard pressed to answer four questions about ss shooting....If it wasn't for the generosity and guidance of a coupla members on this site I would have never had the chance to shoot let alone get hooked on a great sport....

No I do not post much, but try and read as much as I can.....that has been very helpful in getting me to the point of shooting in my first match last month....Without the help and knowledge I have found on this website that would not have happened.....for whetever that may be worth.....

The lost art... of putting pen to paper.

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest who have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.

I used to use paper maps too.

In my case, was exposed to single shots at an early age while riffling through my dads girly magazines. Happened onto an Old West magazine that had an article about long range shooting in the old days. Think the bug started there and lay dormant till I saw an ad for Hagn rifles and actions for sale by John T Amber. Exchanged letters with Amber about the actions but couldn't come up with the money. Then the Rugers showed up on the market. Noticed an ad in Guns and Ammo about the Coors match at Golden.  Was working on a power house in Colorado, met Ron Long and his Dirt Ballers. Has been a lot of fun and a lot of frustration. Never get tired of single shots.

This thread has taken an interesting turn.

I was first exposed to single shots by my high school English teacher, Graham Burnside.  He had all the Trapdoors as well the CW carbines.

The year I graduated from HS, I started to shoot 4-position smallbore with some of my Dad's friends. They loaned me a Speedlock 52, the kind with the brass pistol grip, and a Lyman JTS to start with.  We competed in a league & traveled to other small towns every Friday night.

One competing team was a bunch of really old guys. 3 of them had Stevens 44s set up for position shooting.  They called the rifles "Walnut Hills", probably were 417s.  A couple of the guys must have been skilled woodworkers, because their rifles were transported in fancy wood cases, with felt lining & compartments for accessories.  We always won the matches with those old guys, but they had class. One of the old guys carried his rifle in a small coffin.

Bob, I know you're a converted buckskinner.  You've done well.  Don't let the buckskinner part bother you, nobody's perfect.   Wink
