Hey KAF, I'm real! I am new to this site. And I am also new to the 1885 Highwall. I am looking for one in .225 Winchester. I have been reading a ton on here and learning. Sorry if I did something wrong.

I think that admission to the forum should require a valid email and perhaps also a basic quiz/test of some sort that can sort a person interested in firearms from someone just trying to use the site for other purposes.

I also think that folks need to exhibit some history of use and participation before being allowed to sell stuff on the site.  It'd be interesting to see how many have joined and ONLY participated as sellers.

I'll bet that there are a lot of people like 1903ColtFan who signed up just to read the forum.  It's an excellent source of information.  I shoot with a number of people who read this, and other forums, and I do not believe that they post anything.

It would be interesting to see how many users read the site frequently but never post.

Chris.

I personally do not participate on boards that exhibit some kind of paranoia to people trying to join and participate.  If someone that has no knowledge of single shots but is interested wants to come here and participate, we could probably gain as a whole organization from that rather than sending them away because they can't pass the quiz or give the secrete handshake.

I've bought some really neat stuff from sellers that inherited something in classic single shot, did a search on the internet, and found the exact place they needed to go to sell it (ASSRA Board).  Of course after they sold it, they didn't come back and participate, they had no interest in participating, just selling out.  I similarly bought several items from an older gentleman that had terminal lung cancer and joined here only to get his stuff to single shot users and make it easier on his family after he was gone.  He never participated other than to sell.

I see no useful purpose to limiting sellers to active participants.

I have a good friend that reads here regularly.  He has never posted, and doesn't intend to.  I have also been told by two major single shot gunsmiths that they read here regularly, but have made a vow to never post.  It's too easy for someone to ruin their reputation by getting into a dispute on the internet.

I think the board works fairly well as it is, thanks for Josh and Jim for running it so well, and for doing a minor clean up that needed done.

Dave, I respect your opinion and I agree to a fair degree.
I mostly get bugged by the "commercial" dealers and traders who use us for free advertising for their more commercial operations.
A couple non-firearms sites that I participate in have policies that restrict new users from using the buy/sell forum for a period of time until they have established themselves as part of the community.  However if they wish an exemption they can apply to the moderators ho are quite reasonable.  It is used for exactly the type of situations you describe, and rather successfully.
I agree that there are lots of folk who are serious students of the single shot who prefer to "listen and learn" rather than share in the discourse; and that we should not discourage them.

But the question remains,  what can we do to to support the site and discourage those who abuse it?

I asked a question about this a few weeks ago.  I average at least one or two spams each day that make some reference to ASSRA or something related to gull me into opening their trash.  The latest thing I got had used Harry Eales' name as part of the address with the hope that I would recognize him and open their link without thinking.  There is definitely some strange trolling going on here, and if the administrators were to ask potential new members a simple question or two that would indicate whether they were really interested in single shots, it should take care of things.  OTOH, a friend of mine who is a serious collector of single shots was refused membership in the forum for several years because his last name sounded funny.  Remember the filter that changed the name of the famous sniper to "Carlos Haththingy?"  I do hope we can find a happy medium.

No spam so far. I have no problem with letting new people sell stuff here but as usual, let the buyer beware. I am comfortable buying from the regulars here. Will do my own background on new sellers.
Having a valid email is a requirement for pretty much any place on the internet.

The YaBB software has Anti Spam settings in the Admin side of the software.  This is from a post on the YaBB Community forum what can be done ...
Quote:
You've seen them in your Errorlog and now you need to know what they mean.

The 'We don't serve your kind here'  comes from the honeypot - meaning they filled in a formfield that is in the code so bots see it but should not be visible to browsers. (Although you might want to check and make sure it's really invisible.) This can be turned on or off from the Admin Center -> Anti-Spam Settings -> General Anti-Spam Controls. In 2.6+ you can also click on a link from that page that takes you to an edit screen to change the fake questions.
The 'Your registration has been blocked due to security reasons. Please go back and try again.' comes from the minimum registration time - another bot catcher as the registrant submitted the form at a speed that a human is unlikely to manage. This can be activated and edited from the Admin Center -> Anti-Spam Settings -> General Anti-Spam Controls. As a general rule, humans can be expected to spend at least 15-30 seconds filling out the registration form. Less than that, it's likely to be an automated submission.

I use Yabb for my own web site forum. Registration can be set up that requires the 'applicant' to provide an email address. This is validated by auto send of an email from the forum software that requires a reply. If there is no response within a specified time period the application is deleted.

Once validated I still have to authorise the account. When registering the applicant is asked why they want to join. I get lots of comments like "cuz I like this site", "just to get to know one person closer"; it's generally pretty easy to spot the spammers.

Drawback is the registration appears laborious to the applicant, especially if sat there with a burning question. It also takes work for the administrator: keeping forums spam free is a never ending task and largely thankless. I'm an infrequent poster here but don't recall seeing spam postings so your admin appears to be doing a good job to me.

as the admin for a very large trad bowhunting forum site that's been live for over 11 years, we manually screen EVERY new registrant.  this is a lotta work because we get new members on a daily basis, but it has cut down the spammer/hacker nonsense to maybe 1/10th percent of what it used to be.  if yer using auto registration, shut it down and manually deal with registrations.

if the forum registration options allow the new member to hide their email address, that is NOT grounds for nefarious suspicion.  it just means they don't want their email address made public for software robots or spiders to gather for use in spam emailing.  their call.

if a newbie never makes a post, so what?  what negative indicator is that about, and who cares?

all that matters is what a member publicly posts, either as a new topic or topic reply.  the rest is none of anyone's business.

I hate to see anyone leave. Especially due to someone not being a gentleman when they asked a legitimate question concerning their single shot rifle. I do hope that nobody gets run off by rudeness, or for lack of posting!
I don't agree to a minimum post count before someone can sell. All it accomplishes on forums that have the rule is the new member runs around posting little snippets on various threads until he gets his count up. The end result is a bunch of wasted space, and they post their for sale ad anyway.

I am a moderator for another forum.  We get a lot of spam registrations that are sometimes difficult to weed out.  I think that I am getting good at it but I sometimes irritate some real person by canceling their registration.  I agree with the dude above who manually registers real people.  I am beginning to believe that the best way for a small forum is to have some nice fellow who wants to lurk or post, send an email that introduces him to the administrator--along with a user name and a password.  It seems to me to be more efficient-at this level-than to spend time checking IP addresses or apologizing.

Hello Froggie,

I hadn't a clue someone was taking my name in vain. What a bloody cheek some people have. I wonder if it was because I was the previous member who brought this subject up? I'm just one of several over the years apparently. Undecided

I read this forum every day.  I like it.  I find it informative.  I rarely post and have never sold anything on this forum, yet.  However, I would like to in the fairly near future.  I would deeply resent any restrictions on my being able to post or sell on this forum.  I believe that I would be justified in that resentment as this is the ASSRA forum and I have been an ASSRA member since 1975 or 1976 and have never let my membership lapse.
I have never received any spam that I could attribute to this web site.   The web site manager seems to be doing very well with things so far.  I believe that he should be allowed to continue to use his judgement.
